This is a follow-up to my earlier post where I visited St. John's, the most easterly city in North America (excluding Greenland), and the capital of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The geography of Newfoundland itself is rather fascinating, but what's even more fascinating, almost to the point of being "dramatic", is the (curiously formed) Avalon Peninsula that juts out boldly into the sea at the farthest corner of the island of Newfoundland. St. John's then sits at the farthest tip of this Avalon Peninsula. A Peninsula, we know, is a piece of land surrounded by water on three sides and connected to its mainland on one side. Two such good (example) places that I have recently visited here are (1) Florida (2) Italy, for which the average widths of the tracts of land that protrude out into the Sea, are respectively 120 miles and 150 miles. When the piece of land (i.e., the 4th side) that connects the Peninsula to its mainland is narrow, it's called an "Isthmus", the isthmuses of Panama (50 miles wide) and Suez (80 miles wide) being famous examples. Here, the "Isthmus of Avalon" in Newfoundland is, however, special. In its narrowest part, it's only about 3 miles wide, which means, on the Isthmus of Avalon, one can simultaneously spot the (Atlantic) Ocean both to one's east side and west side. Indeed, I observed this as I followed my flightpath from St. John's (CYYT), the easternmost point of Newfoundland, along the Isthmus of Avalon (via its narrow neck), all the way across the island, to its westernmost point, Stephenville (CYJT). En-route, I've planned to visit the highest summit of Newfoundland, The Cabox (mountain), (waypoint "CUSTO" on my GPS Map), located 15 miles north of my destination (CYJT). I've departed late PM from St. John's, heading westward across the island, absorbing the fascinating geographical features. The terrain is inundated with thousands of waterbodies (ponds and lakes) as far as eye could see, thus creating a remarkably peculiar (but beautiful) pockmarked landscape (see shot #s 7-9). As I approached the west coast of the island, small hills and picturesque mountains started appearing on my path, culminating in The Cabox, a wide-topped mountain (see shot #s 10-12), which is Newfoundland's highest summit, and, to my surprise, I learned that it's actually part of the (same) Appalachian Range, I'm so familiar with, closer to home...🙂...down so far south...

As I finally approached Stephenville, daylight was almost gone (see my images below), and to make things harder, the ILS approach to (CYJT) Rwy 27 could not be enabled on the on-board GPS units as I'd hoped to do (there was no Arrival Procedures listed for this remote airport in this far-off land...🙂...). I was however able to set the frequency for ILS Rwy 27 and align my a/c for localizer capture (the dual large Garmin units are a lifesaver...🙂...for positional awareness). I made full use of LOC/GS guidance, leading to a safe touchdown into Stephenville airport (this FSW C414 is such a nice, competent, and easy plane to fly...🙂...). Meanwhile, the sun has gone down on the western horizon of Newfoundland, over the waters of Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Hope you enjoy this collection of pictures from my trip today, as I've flown, a distance of 300 miles, across the entire width of this unique island...coast-to-coast, sea-to-sea...Newfoundland being indeed a most remarkable place on earth...

In the early 1980s (yep, I'm dating myself) I flew rotary wing out of St. John's - Bell 206A, B & L. Worked most of the island. Fantastic scenery and interesting weather. Fabulous people. Fond memories even after all this time.

Great idea for a flight. You're getting to know Newfoundland pretty thoroughly.
