Skewed runways... How can we fix it?

Featured Replies

Appart from AutoOrtho and SimHeaven, I don't have any other scenery addons in my XP12.1.3 install.

Even without the above mentioned scenery enhancements I had the same problem at some default airports, sometimes to a level that actually impacts on the execution of proper takeoffs and landings, like in LPMA but even at LPPT!

The runways sometimes have some really huge bumps / slopes, way more pronnounced than IRL, but worst thant that, some are skewed to one side, like LPPT 03 / 21 where you land and notice by simply looking at the Artificial Horizon or PFD that the aircraft is banked left or right 😕

Is there a simple way to fix it, other than probably buying and installing payware addon airports ?

AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)

That‘s a known problem that can happen at some airports when using AO. But even without AO, you should take a look at BGGH 😀

You can find some fixes sometimes but it‘s still one of the limitations of using AO.

There should be a possibility to generate a better mesh from DTM (elevation-data) can be used with Ortho4XP but unfortunately I have never understood how to use them with AO…

Thx for the reply @Franz007,

this is an area where X-Plane lags behind MSFS for sure ... and one that IMO needs attention from LR, at least by making available some sort of mesh fine tuning not directly associated with the whole tile(s) a given airport belongs to...

I've experienced it at LPMA and LPPT with pure defualt scenery too.

Absolutely but that is all part of their new scenery that should be coming one day...I am sure it will bring many advantages compared to the old terrain. They are perfectly aware of that point at Laminar 🙂

You can build your tiles (also for AutoOrtho if you want) with Ortho4XP.

Use apt_smoothing_pix=16 or higher as the one used with the default AO scenery packs was found to be too low in several places. Or create a JOSM patch as usual.

Maybe also interesting for you and others with these old AO scenery packs https://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/files/file/90288-autoortho-scenery-sets-patches/

There is a topic on other website about airports that need flattening. If they are looged, they get checked and than flattened if needed untill such times mesh is corrected.

Thanks, the second link should help. I have seen many patches for Ortho4XP (and many payware-sceneries include them) but they all have different file-extensions than the ones used by AO, that’s why I have never been able to use them together with AO. And I have no clue how to create a JOSM-patch…

Is there a simple way to fix it,

download the airport from the gateway with WED, then check the "flatten airport" checkbox and save it.
