Fire Bombers

Featured Replies

Watching the fire tragedy in California the past days the avgeek in me can only sit in awe of the videos of the great number of transport aircraft converted to this mission and the skill of the crews that fly them. I’ve seen everything from a DC9, a DC10, C130 helicopters and various others like a converted P3 and the venerable Super Scooper. And those pilots flying a heavy jet transport full of retardants into a valley at slow speed with the turbulence from the mountains and updrafts from the fire. I mean which came first, skill or guts? The only thing I’ve seen compatible was watching crop dusting in Louisiana flying under wires and charging toward trees at the end of a field only to climb over by a foot at the last second leaving you thinking a crash was imminent. Those guys make formula one racing look tame.

It is a very dangerous job.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

There was a video clip on the news from the cockpit of a C-130 behind the PIC, and he was torquing on the Yoke pretty heavily during his Drop run...

They make it look easy, but it's got to be a constant physical and mental fight.  Stay on target, don't get too low or too high, Bitcxxn Betty constantly in your ear, ground effect and thermal turbulence to deal with, possibly poor visibility.  Yep, constant stress.

Just going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer. Too many problems with the new Sims! 😱
Trying to keep peace and harmony and the will of Landru on the site seems to be a full time job!

And that's when things go well.
