AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)

A design that was way too far ahead of its time.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

Nicely made video. Important to remember that this thing was completely forgotten until the B2 bomber first flew and then in the Horton’s case it quickly became evident that 2+2 equalled 5😃.

All the performance figures were ‘projected’.

The remains that are kept at Udvar-Hazy are of the V3 prototype. Despite a great deal of internet claims and speculation, the only time this ‘flew’ was when the Eighth Airforce bombed the factory.

The V2 prototype did indeed make two successful flights. On its third flight it crashed and killed the pilot. The V1 versions also flew but they were unpowered gliders.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the Horton was what it tells us about the end days of word not allowed Germany. The main imperative of the 229 with its innovative design, the use of ‘non-strategic materials’ and the ability to drop a couple of big bombs was actually to give the Horton’s and their work force a good reason not to be shut down and absorbed into the wider German aircraft industry and after late ‘44 not to be forced into the Volkssturm and have to face the Red Army in a trench on the eastern front.

The two big achievements of the German aircraft industry in WW2 were both down to Willy Messerschmitt;

the worlds first practical (ish) swept wing jet fighter and the continuous refinement of Bf109 production that enabled the factories to keep knocking them out with a minimum of valuable materials and a maximum amount of slave labour until nearly the end of WW2.

The video and the aircraft are both examples of great advances, each in it's own field.

The Horten in the aerodynamics, the video in the effective use of A.I. for it's creation.

Perhaps just creativity at their best? It would take another forty years to perfect computer controlled flyby wire that would allow something like the 229 to actually become flyable.

Interesting that the forum software doesn’t allow us to name of the system of government that existed in Germany between 1933 and 1945?
