A lazy, nostalgic VFR flight between CZBB and KPDX

Featured Replies

For the past couple of weeks, I've really been enjoying the tail-dragger Beech Twin (D18S)...and created a plain shiny skin texture set for some personal flights.

Sometimes, the flightsim stars align perfectly to produce a very, very enjoyable flight.

Today, was a VFR flight from Boundary Bay (CZBB) to Portland International (KPDX), flying the Denarq modded Carenado D18S under overcast skies.

Normally, I fly with ActiveSky...today I just flew with the default cloud textures...most of our snow is gone already, so it was more realistic today without AS, IMHO.

To me, this is a perfect low and slow aircraft...I was planning a low altitude (3,000') cruise...for the most part, easily made until about 50 miles from PDX, until I had to drop to 2,400' to stay under the cloud cover.

Only a couple of minutes of rain...and no icing! (The icing effects on this aircraft do look great, BTW!)

Carving through the valleys of Washington State, first following the water to SEA, then south-westerly over to Longview, WA to stay clear of terrain, then following the Columbia River into Portland.

There's nothing more enjoyable that managing the carb heat, oil cooler temps and fuel mixture with a couple of beautiful sounding twin radials. The Denarq Mod is really, really well done!

This aircraft has just enough "automation" to keep it flying level and on a heading...no boredom while looking out of the windows at the scenery of the beautiful Pacific Northwest.

Messed up my approach a little...meant to land 28R but tuned the ILS to 28L...not that it matters...this aircraft is hand-flown from wheels up to cruise and then from cruise back to touchdown. Made a nice visual into 28R with a short taxi to Atlantic for Customs Clearance and some additional fuel (and oil!) to continue southward!

Another 1-3/4 hours added to the logbook.

Hope you enjoy the photo captures of this memorable flight!

Thanks for the feedback John!

Excellent!  That's actually a very good addon with the mod - not sure if you've seen it:  https://flightsim.to/file/51532/denarq-twin-beech

Thanks Ryan!

Agreed!!! The Denarq Mod is really, really well done!!! Typically, (for change of pace from tubeliners and other GA's), I like to fly the Duckworks DC-3.

This Twin Beech pretty much "forces" you to sit at the controls with the lack of an autopilot...and requires slightly more finesse of the twin radials during flight than the DC-3...I find the flights with this model very entertaining!

The free castering tailwheel on the Twin Beech is also a little more finicky than the DC-3...which I really like...never boring!

I wanted to share this flight as the weather conditions (to me!) were perfect together with navigating terrain and with a risk of icing along the way.

Thanks for the feedback!

Fine set, thanks for sharing !

Thank you!

Glad, you dropped by here, rmeier....🙂...With snow and ice nearly gone now, it's time to explore...lazy and nostalgic sound good to me...🙂...

D18S is one of my favorites...since the days of Milton Shupe's (classic) freeware ...

Of course, this region of exploration, I believe, you know well from RW....Lovely set...Liked your plain and shiny repaint...looks great on this airplane...🙂...

Thanks for sharing...!

An excellent trip in a really nice vintage aircraft!

Any attempt to stretch fuel is guaranteed to increase headwinds

My specs: AMD Radeon RX6700XT, AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, 32GB RAM, 34" monitor, screen resolution: 2560x1080

Thank you! I figured it was time to go from forum "lurking" to actually posting a few photos again...still behind the paint brush...just posting fewer of them...like this one! Still tweaking on the comp layer of this aircraft...but really enjoy the bare metal look!

Appreciate the feedback!

Thank you Bernd! This is just such a fun aircraft to fly, and to take in the scenery!
