May 22, 20251 yr A major milestone for the project this week, as the FAA and BLM are moving forward with a notice of intent to prepare the Environmental Impact Statement for the new airport. For those who don't know, the proposed location is 23 miles south of the Vegas strip along Interstate 15. The airport will have two runways - 18L-36R will be 12,000 ft and 18R-36L will be 15,000 ft. Still a long way away (the airport is estimated to be complete in 2037) but it will be nice to have a new airport to fly into. Looking at the location of the airport below, 36R and 36L should be an easy straight-in shot. For 18L and 18R, there could be some interesting approaches, as they seem to be surrounded by terrain. And here is the proposed airport layout. Edited May 22, 20251 yr by RNAVV19R
May 22, 20251 yr I’m glad I’ll have probably retired by the time this opens. Is that the prevailing wind there north south ? It’s usually south westerly when ever I go into Maccarran , or whatever it’s called now. The wind in Vegas can be troublesome, it nearly had me on one occasion. 787 captain. It could be that initially it will be supplemental but then eventually take over completely. Or, they could keep McCarran as a regional hub (or a Southwest hub) and push everything else to the new airport. 23 miles is pretty far away. It's darn near in California. If this holds true in the area where the new airport will be built, then we will see a lot of approaches into 18L/R. Looks like there should be enough room for about a 5-6nm straight-in approach to these runways, but with the elevation in that area, the heat during the summer, and the nearby terrain, that should make for a very bumpy approach.
