Thanks for the responses.

I read where the P51s flew escort for the allied bombers making missions into Germany during ww2.  I won't to recreate that and find out how much fuel they had when they returned.  Also a factor would be if they had dog fights over Germany which would use up valuable fuel. Were they flying on fumes on return?

There are several modifications of P-51

the one you referring is outfitted with Merlin engine and bubble canopy which is P-51D.

I'm also WWII nerd have tones of books on different WWII aircraft, I also collect copies of original WW2 airplane flight manuals. If you really deep into the subject there are actually performance tables with the cruise settings which is great way to test in virtual replica of MSFS.

My impression that escort missions that Mustangs were flying  would call for an average of 10 minutes dogfight. So there would be plenty of fuel to fly home. Unlike cinematic impression of WW2 movies, dogfight often didn't involved aerobatic maneuvers but rather "boom and zoom" tactics like airplane would get superior altitude and dive on enemy, shoot and climb again. If experienced pilot found himself in disengage he would rather dive and escape using superior speed. Majority WWII of air victories were when victim got shot down without seeing enemy aircraft. WW2 aircraft often stick together in dogfight and fly in formation or at least units of two. Those who separated from the "flock" most likely would be picked by experience enemy and shot down

I had never heard of DCS World until now.  I downloaded and installed it.

I saw the P51D listed at $24.95.  Question: Can this be used in MSFS 2024, or it only fpr DCS?

Use the default tf51 for free and for testing the true to live "feel of flight". Install DCS World latest version for free and opt for any of the free scenery areas - I sugest the Crimea.

They tf51 is free to play!

You can also test most modules for a week or so, for free, somyou could then test the combate version p51d, and any of the ww2 modules.

It's only for DCS.

Surely not everybody was kung fu fighting.
