I'm also WWII nerd have tones of books on different WWII aircraft, I also collect copies of original WW2 airplane flight manuals. If you really deep into the subject there are actually performance tables with the cruise settings which is great way to test in virtual replica of MSFS. My impression that escort missions that Mustangs were flying would call for an average of 10 minutes dogfight. So there would be plenty of fuel to fly home. Unlike cinematic impression of WW2 movies, dogfight often didn't involved aerobatic maneuvers but rather "boom and zoom" tactics like airplane would get superior altitude and dive on enemy, shoot and climb again. If experienced pilot found himself in disengage he would rather dive and escape using superior speed. Majority WWII of air victories were when victim got shot down without seeing enemy aircraft. WW2 aircraft often stick together in dogfight and fly in formation or at least units of two. Install DCS World latest version for free and opt for any of the free scenery areas - I sugest the Crimea. They tf51 is free to play! You can also test most modules for a week or so, for free, somyou could then test the combate version p51d, and any of the ww2 modules.
