PSA: GPU driver wipe & clean install periodically

Featured Replies

It's been a best practice for me for a while and the net result is always noticeably positive.   After installing SU4 I was struck with subtle micro-stutters and scenery loading longer frame stutters, dropping down to maybe 2-4 in a 2h flight.  Lately, after 20 or so flights now in SU4 have noticed a significant increase, though in between those, ultra smooth still.  SU3 was similar.  So decided to do this routine which I might do every 2-3 months, regardless of changing the GPU driver, just wipe and reinstall the same driver, or take a chance on the newest.  My practice is:

  1. Thru Win 11 add/remove programs, delete all Nvidia entries except NVCP.
  2. Reboot to Safe Mode, run DDU to remove all options related to the NV GPU in the box.
  3. Run DiskClean, delete DX Shader Cache files
  4. Use NV's clean install of GPU driver--this action auto-deletes driver specific shader cache files, and resets NVCP
  5. Reinstall the sharpening reg hack as it gets blown out with the above.

After this ritual, once again, improvement marked by 4 flights all 100% stutter-free.  I think stuttering surpasses most other threats to the suspension of disbelief.

Cheers

Noel

I recently done it for the first time in 4 years and it did help.

I don’t see the need to do it too often though.

You're using shader cache?

The sharpening registry hack?  I'll have to look for that one...
