G1000 fonts

Featured Replies

Does anyone have a solution for, or know why the X-plane G1000 fonts are so far removed from the font that Garmin uses? It really distracts from the whole look and feel of the X1000. For example, the zeros have a diagonal bar through them, and the nines are just wrong in X-plane. I did a search online and there are fonts available that are almost, if not, identical to the ones that Garmin uses. I have never understood this.

First of all, the X1000 is just an approximation of a G1000, so deviations from the real thing ar possible.

Second, fonts need to be licensed for commercial use, usually involving some amount of money. If you think some font works better for the X1000 and said fond is licensed for commercial use without fees, you can still try to get in touch with Lainar.

There is one additional aspect here.

The dev that makes these avionics for X-Plane is a really bright guy. He often sees where "real" systems have shortcomings...and then tries to code an alternate version that is even better than the real thing. I argue with him all the time to "dumb things down" again to make them more realistic...even if this means less capable.

I could well imagine that he looked at the real font and said "Oh, but that is dangerous, it is easy to confuse a 0 with a O, lets do the scientific thing and make the zero be the version with the slash, so they can´t be confused!".

Are you sure you are not confusing the old legacy fonts with the modern fonts, which are found in the G1000NXI? (and not portrayed in XP12 afaik?)

Because the fonts in XP12 looks ok to me.  Sure, not 100% replica, but close enough. If anything, the font size is more off. 🙂

As an ex-typographer, I agree it’d be excellent to have the exact right font.

but whe I look at the list of priorities for the sim, that just goes right to the bottom. 🤙

You have a good point I can see him doing that 😁

I agree not a priority but they have their other avionics looking pretty good. Its mainly just the numbers that jump out as being way off

You actually raise a good point there. It appears that the really old legacy G1000 had a similar font to xplane but then it appears to have changed on the latter legacy units and the NXi. Thanks for that it kind of explains it.
