April 1Apr 1 I guess a question for the RW pilots here... in watching countless YT videos and real life videos, on takeoff in the A320 the pilot flying (at the start of the take off roll when advancing throttles to FLX) says something like MAN FLEX AUTOTHRUST SRS RUNWAY BLUE... and the pilot not flying responds with "check"... and off they go.. My question is, does it ever happen when the PNF does not say "check" (what does he say?) and what is the procedure after that? Ive not seen it in any video.. perhaps its a very rare occurrence? April 1Apr 1 I'm a Boeing guy so can't speak to an Airbus specific procedure, but as general checklist methodology - if something isn't as commanded, you verbalize it. Maybe there's a proceduralized call for that; for instance, after landing we have a procedure for the pilot monitoring to call "speed brake" to verify the speed brake is deployed. If it's not, the PM calls "no speed brake". (This is really only applicable when the FO is PM because the captain will just pull it manually anyway). But that's a proceduralized call - "speedbrake" or "no speedbrake". But not every condition will have a proceduralized callout for a non-normal condition. At that point, you just have to lean on those good old fashioned plain language communication skills, and concisely and clearly tell the PF what is happening. We really, REALLY stress an assertive and communicative PM in the industry these days, huge emphasis item. Andrew Crowley
April 1Apr 1 The "check" is basically an incapacity failsafe. For example if the pilot flying fails to answer "check" to the 100 knots call, the Pilot Monitoring has to look up from his instrument and assess the situation. That is exactly what happend when the SAS crew was about to take off from a taxiway in Brussels a few weeks ago. The pilot flying noticed something was off and hesitated to answer "check" after the 100 knots call, which prompted the pilot monitoring to look up, realize what was going on and calling "stop, stop, stop" which then lead to the abortion of the take off.
April 1Apr 1 The “Check” is basically short for I’ve checked what you just said is correct , and I concur. If that turns out not to be the case it’s as Stearmandriver says, back to plain English….no,…negative..it’s not,..mines reading …,etc. Between them the crew will then gain an understanding of the discrepancy and then if appropriate go on to rectify it. Also if you get no response when you’re expecting a “ check” back eg “80kts“ it’s a warning sign of possible subtle pilot incapacitation. 787 captain. April 2Apr 2 Once I did a complex endorsement for a guy in the club, so demoed an emergency gear extension in Arrow . After pulling circuit breaker I made simulated approach. When pulled gear handle and announced “ gear down, three reds” he replied “check “ lol Life time flight sim enthusiast, current airplane owner 172P (past C182F).
