RC4 performance hit?

Featured Replies

Heard about RC4 a while back when it was announced... got very interested in the concept. Finally more realistic ATC which allows for SID/STAR usage so one can finally take full advantage of an FMC inflight. I have finally worked out pretty good solutions (well not solutions more like workarounds) to all the limitations of FS9's ATC when flying heavy iron IFR but RC4 takes care of it all (and properly) in one sweep.Anyways I have read the info on the website as well as a lot of the posts here trying to get a feel for RC4. The one thing I have not really seen talked about though is performance. Does RC4 produce a hit in fps? I saw one or two threads about performance hit from the little text window but that seems semi-unrelated to RC4 as it looked to be more of a display/driver issue. (I run 2D panels when flying big iron anyhow so I don't forsee any problems like that for me anyways)But I can't tell if the core logic in RC4 will affect fps in any way? Especially when you're shooting approaches into Chicago or New York or London, etc. when FS will have 250+ AI aircraft flying around (My traffic% is at 98 with UT, and using FS9's Traffic SDK tool I usually see 200+ aircraft active in the huge cities) does RC4 eat away at frames? More than FS9's ATC? Less?My computer is reasonably powerful (AMD64 3200+, 1GB RAM, 6600GT) and currently in my setup I have fps in the lower 20's (limit set to 25) even with moderate weather and complex aircraft (i.e. PMDG 737). I also run AISmooth and ASV weather. RC4 sounds pretty cool but for it to be rendered useless in large cities due to fps problems would be a shame. Can I get some feedback as far as performance goes?thanks!Ruahrc

Ruahrc,You'll be happy to know RC has a very minimal impact on fps. You have a more powerful machine than mine, and I don't notice a fps drop when RC is running. There are so many other things going on in FS (like AI, dense wx, complex aircraft, as you mentioned) that would have a much greater impact on fps than RC.Even though I don't use it myself, Pete Dawson's WideFS allows you use a networked PC which runs additional apps like RC to take some of the load off your simming PC. I think there is a fps improvement associated with that, I'm sure one of the many beta testers using it can comment. But that shouldn't be a 'necessary' step as RC has a minimal impact on the system anyway.Subs

I have found, at least on my computer, if I leave the ADV Display window open, I get a 4-5 frame drop. I have assigned a key to open & close the box. With the window closed, frames go back to normal.I cast a vote for the MS FS9 type window that only appears when ATC calls or you hit the "~" key!Rick

If you right-click the AdvDisp box there is a option to Hide When Empty. This will auto-close the window when not being used, just as you describe. Try it and see how it goes :()Subs

Where do you assign a key to close and open the ADVDisplay window? Many thanksRegards/

Hi Nick,If you have a registered version of FSUIPC it's on the 'hotkeys' tab of the fsuipc options. Otherwise I'm not sure. All the best,John

fsuipc, hot key, i think.or maybe, just maybe, add the following to the fsuipc.ini file[Keys]0=220,8,1009,0pure speculative wise #### guess.i use the ` to turn on the advdisp and turn it off.ironic, heh?jd

Ok, thanks
