  1. And another snag I just ran into: I figured I'd call MS themselves, or at least their support center, but apparently the only support they're offering now is for FSX. Yowza.
  2. Hey everyone,Thanks for everyone's advice earlier on about my performance issue; I took the CPU into Best Buy and they had a look at it, and told me that my resolution setting were off. Having fixed it, I took my computer home, and started up FS9, and it worked perfectly - for a while. After about a week or so, the same performance problem came up (with the FPS slowing every few minutes whenever I shifted my view away from the 2D cockpit). In any event, I decided to try an uninstall/reinstall of FS9. After this happened, the splash screen for FS9 showed up, then sat for a few minutes, then the entire program shut down - without an error message of any kind. I went to Microsoft's support center, and found that they had a page dedicated to a problem just like this. I went through all their recommended steps, but I'm still left looking at a blank screen (the sim still crashes on startup). At this point, I'm left wondering if disk 4 is bad, or if something else might be at play here.If anyone else has had a similar issue and found something else to be the problem (other than MS's diagnosis), I would definitely appreciate the help. Thanks very much!George
  3. Hi all,I'm a little confused by the explanations above, but something similar has happened to me. I just uninstalled FS9, then reinstalled it. I double-clicked the icon to make sure it worked, and the sim crashes right after the welcome screen (the one that shows a DC-3 in the foreground). No messages or anything. The sim installed completely, and it happened when I clicked "run". I tryed restarting my computer, but it's doing the same thing. Any ideas?
  4. Not as yet; I guess I was apprehensive about downloading something extra. However, I will try that when I get back from work. Thanks again everyone for all your advice! I'll post my findings in a few days. Cheers,George
  5. Not to keep hijacking this thread, but when it happened the last time, I hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and it brought up the windows task manager info. Under the performance tab, it showed that fs9.exe was using about 90% of my CPU. Given that my CPU is a 3GHz processor with 2.5Gigs of RAM, is that possible/normal for FS9? If not, then this could explain the performance drop. My sliders in FS9 are not maxed out (not a single one), and I even downgraded my default clouds to a lower resolution. George
  6. Hiya Joe,Thank you for the tip; it confused me at first (which probably sounds strange, since I've been playing FS in its different versions since 1995!). As for the issue at hand, I'm thinking that the only other course of action would be to uninstall and reinstall my FS. Will I have to reinstall all sceneries (both free and payware) that I've installed over the years? Or will they still be available upon reinstallation of FS? On a side note, I can't help feeling that something might be wrong with my video card, but nothing else on my computer appears to be affected.George
  7. I just noticed something in my Addon Scenery folder that I never noticed was there before. Along with all of my other sceneries that have been downloaded, there's also a SCENERY.dat file. I know that this file can be found in some other scenery folders, but I don't recall ever seeing it in the Addon Scenery folder itself. I moved it to a non-FS folder, restarted FS9 and it seemed to work - for about 10 minutes this time, before dropping the frame rates. I just opened my Addon Scenery folder again, and the scenery.dat file is back. Being that I never noticed it before (and I've added quite a lot of scenery in the past), is this file supposed to be there? If so, does FS automatically update it even if it's deleted? I thought it was rather odd that the file returned even though I didn't add anything to the sim since moving it. Any suggestions?George
  8. I use Avast. I ran an anti-virus scan, and it came up with some interesting results. After quarantining what was found, I gave FS another try, but with the same result. Yikes, just checked the 'services' tab in msconfig and it showed about 56 services still running. The thing is, I'm pretty sure they've been running for quite some time (a lot of them are Microsoft items; not sure if they're essential or if I should stop them) without any effect on FS in the past. I'll try and clean that up and let you know how it goes. Thanks again!
  9. Well folks, I'm at a bit of a loss. I turned off my anti-virus software, but the problem happened all over again. I also tried deleting the traffic file that I added today (thinking that might have been part of the problem in case the file was corrupt). However, about five minutes into the flight (regardless of where I begin), the simulator loses frame rates for a few mins, then goes back to 20fps or so, then drops back down to 3-4. It doesn't matter how dense the area is I'm flying over - usually, the scenery density doesn't impact the frames too much with my settings. Any suggestions? Thanks again,George
  10. I can try that, however my anti-virus software has always remained running before with no drop in performance. Out of curiosity, why now would there be any change?
  11. Hi all,I've searched similar threads in the forums, but couldn't find one that pertained to my particular issue. I hadn't played on the sim for a few days, and today turned it on and the frame rates kept dropping from 20fps (where it's tagged) to 3fps, and back up again. It would happen every time I shifted the view to 'spot', and continue to lag in performance for a few minutes before going back up to 20. This would continue until returning to cockpit view. Besides adding a traffic file today (using the MRAI installer), I hadn't tinkered with it before. I thought that perhaps it was the video card driver, so I updated it, but the problem has persisted. Adjusting the display settings (reducing the sliders in various categories) did not help, and I'm left wondering what else to do. I've never encountered this problem before, and any help would be appreciated. Thanks for reading,GeorgeSystem (in case it helps):Pentium 4 3.00GHz processor2.5GB RAMWin XP SP3GeForce 9400 GT video card with the latest drivers (195.62)P.S. I read earlier that some of the latest drivers of NVIDIA don't help with FS9 performance, but keep in mind that I encountered this performance problem before updating my drivers.
  12. Thanks for your help, bud. It looks like I'll have to email them. I may have deleted my product information (confirmation/serial number) after I installed the original package. Oy!Cheers,
  13. Good day all,I have a question for anyone that has the updated 777s from Simmer's Sky/Overland. As a current owner of the FS9 version, is the 777-200LR update free, or does one have to re-purchase the entire package in order to have it? Having paid a rather pretty penny (albeit for both Airbus and Boeing), I wouldn't want to go through that again just for the B777-200LR (I'm very satisfied with the current versions). Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!
  14. Alrighty, I'll have him try that out. Thanks again!
  15. Hello everyone,Thanks so much for the responses, and they were very helpful. Unfortunately, we had already selected the "show hidden files" option, and there was still no FSX.cfg. We did check that the path was correct (C:Documents and Settingsuser nameApplication DataMicrosoftFSX) - but there was no cfg file to be found. Even after doing a Windows file search, nothing turned up. Any other suggestions? Thanks again,
  16. ...Good day everyone,a friend of mine recently installed FSX, and wanted to install FS9 aircraft. After reading an article in Computer Pilot magazine, he found an excellent article on how to do that. The thing is, it requires a change to the fsx.cfg file. I came over to help out with that, but neither of us (even after a file search and following all instructions given by the magazine) can actually find the said file! There's a scenery.cfg and oldscenery.cfg, but no fsx.cfg. Has anyone else run into this problem? And if so, can you point us in the right direction? Thanks,
  17. Well, expensive as it is, I splurged and bought it - the Dash 8-300 is probably my favorite aircraft, and I couldn't bear not to have it lol. That said, I am very much impressed with the performance, the visual model (I'm a stickler for eye candy) and especially the SOUNDS!!! wow!!! I think the sounds alone would be worth at least half that price, considering accurate turboprop sounds (specific to a certain engine) are extremely hard to come by. My only issue (and I'm not sure if anyone else has this problem) is that after installing the version with just 2-d cockpit and wing views, the only livery I got was Tyrolean. I was of the impression that 6 liveries came with the package. Anyone else encounter this?
  18. I agree, the freeware version is excellent, but admittedly, I'm a big fan of eye candy as well as functionality. I was shocked to see such an accurate and detailed visual model on the payware version (and it appears the cockpit will be much easier to read on this one, another plus!). So I'm definitely excited about it.
  19. Thank you both for your responses; they were very helpful. I see the project is coming along nicely! I'll definitely try to be first in line upon its release. Cheers,
  20. Good day everyone,I saw some excellent previews of Fanda's upcoming Dash 8-300 (payware) on their site some months back, but since then the site has been down and I haven't heard anything else from the group. Does anyone have any information about it? How the project is coming along, costs, possible release soon, etc? Any information will be appreciated. Thanks,George
  21. You're correct, UT does compile it by itself - once you click the "compile" button and choose the areas around the world that you would like UT to activate. My AA is activated, and I set traffic to 100%, but still, no AA at MIA or anywhere else (I flew MIA - NAS, and there was other traffic, but no AA Eagle, which is odd since they have many flights a day and chances are one would be there).
  22. That could be the problem; the updates section, however, isn't working at the moment. Perhaps at some point it'll come back and I'll check then. Thanks for all your help!
  23. Thanks, Odaat. As far as international traffic goes, I will check that out. As for the percentage, mine was set at 90%. I would imagine that even some AA aircraft would appear. I'll try again and see what happens. Cheers,George
  24. Hello,I recently purchased UT and installed it. After compiling all flight plans for AI using UT, I noticed that quite a few airlines aren't showing up - American, for example. Did I do something wrong? I flew to MIA and there were no AA aircraft. I would've posted on UT's forum, but it's down at the moment. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,George
