"The" question..
Alex Sarfati replied to David Roch's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etc
Hi,Have you ever tried tweaking your FSX? At the moment, you're sitting around telling us that your 3.8GHz 920 runs FSX terribly. If you tweak FSX, it will run smooth. You're recommending people in certain categories to upgrade or not. I would be in the upgrade category, which I did do. Yet, with my tweaked FSX, I ran it really smoothly for a stock clocked i5 650. That's no sandy bridge, yet it runs AS EGLL, PMDG 744x, REX, GEX, UT2 @ 100% at 15+ FPS and only slight microstutters. I bet that if you went and tweaked your FSX right now, in 10 minutes you'd come back noticing a big improvement. An upgrade is not always required.PS: Use Bojote's tweaking tool and shaded 3.0 mod -

Hi,I used to run on stock clocks just fine ;) -
Hi all,Good to hear that your problems have been fixed. I Read a while ago that FSX should be installed AFTER OCing because OCing with FSX already installed causes corruption in certain files (in your case DLL's). I think it should be made a note to all that OCing should be done before FSX and addon installation.

Hi Word Not Allowed,With my old setup (i5 650 @ 3.2, GTS450, 8GB 1333Mhz) I used to run PMDG 744x, AS EGLL, REX, GEX, UT2 @ 100% at about 15 FPS in VC, and 18 in spot. However, I had a very well tweaked FSX.cfg and display profile. It may be telling me it's low FPS, but I only ever got one or two microstutters every minute or so. Not that bad for a stock clock dual core! I suppose it's what we are used to. Before that machine, I had a Pentium 4 3GHz, 1GB DDR. Upgrading to the 650 was like a massive jump in performance. Whereas you are used to powerful systems, the latest hardware etc. You know what it's like to fly FSX smoothly ;)Put it this way, millions of people fly economy class every year., tens of thousands business, and only thousands first. My upgrade to a 650 was like flying in business for the first time after flying in economy for many many flights. A massive step up. Your sitting in first, and always have been. You don't know what economy is like ;). Lucky bugger -
Wow. Wow.Wow.That's awesome. I can't think of anything else to say!Even more off topic here, on the NH-D14, can you remove and replace all the fans? If you can, I might just replace it with fancy red LED fans (to match the case)I've just had an idea for nVidia, they should have little LED lights on their cards to add to the look haha

Hi Howard,She's currently installing UT2 at the moment. I still have REX and GEX to install and then everythings on...this has been a longggggggggg night. After those are installed, im going to bed (during the day ;)) for a few hours, then I'll do a test flight without any tweaks. I'll then apply a tweaked FSX.cfg and compare again. -
Hi Daniel,Yes, a good aftermarket cooler is definitely required. I'd recommend either the Corsair H70 or the Noctua NH-D14, both are on par with each other. And that is the correct chip.

Hi,Why are you running FSX with such low texture resolutions? bumb them up to the max. My slower i5 650 could handle those specs at Aerosoft EGLL with PMDG 744x, UT2 REX & GEX. I admit it was a well tweaked system, but even my system got 15+ FPS with 100% traffic and higher settings than that. -
Hi Alan,I have a slight suspision that you could easily test. I see you are running a very old and very slow AGP graphics card. Go ahead and turn down that resolution a bit. The errors are probably because thats passed the cards max resolution. Give it a try. Try a resolution like 800x600, if no errors, keep going up till you get an error. If you do get errors at 800x600, then it must be something else.

Hi all,I don't see how people complain about having i7 920's at 4.2GHz that still have performance issues in heavy areas. My old machine (i7 650 @ 3.2, 8GB 1333, GTS450) ran FSX at almost max settings, with 100% UT2 traffic at say FSDT JFK with manhattanX at close to 20FPS. There was only ever the odd stutter but nothing major. -
Hi Daniel,You would be more beneficial going with a 1155 socket i7-2600k. They can overclock to the region of 4.8-5GHz, and even at stock speeds beat the lower X58 CPUs.
