1. I've looked into it in the past as well, and its always been too expensive to really justify, but not so much that it wasn't suggested as a birthday present numerous times. I didn't even realize there was a local sim experience for *ONLY* $140 for 30 mins.
2. If you are in the Vancouver area, or are planning to be sometime soon, and you have an extra $70 burning a hole in your pocket, you may be interested in this. I've already bought mine, it will be a dream come true for me, as I'll probably never flying the real one! http://www.groupon.com/vancouver?dl=d47388
3. Wow, this is why back ups should NEVER be located next to your working gear, and preferably offsite. 3, 2, 1 back up strategy: 3 copies, 2 on separate media, 1 offsite. For my personal data I have 2 external drives that I rotate once a week to the fireproof safe at my work. I am starting to utilize cloud storage, but I still like to know I can get my hands on physical backup media. For a business, especially a dev house, there is no excuse for not having some redundant storage, especially with all the cloud storage option available. The guys at Pixar learned the hard way too:
4. I kind of maybe did that a little bit on purpose - stir the pot a bit without really stirring it. Sorry 'bout that!
5. ...Computer games aren't supposed to be educational! (If you are a mod, you can take your finger off the ban button now!) Take yesterdays Aerocache of the Day, the USS Utah. I've always had an interest in the Pearl Harbor attack and the pacific theater in general. I remember watching Tora, Tora, Tora with my grandfather when I was a kid and he would often explain what happened in those days. My father was a child in Honolulu on Dec 7th 1941. I visited Pearl two years ago and took in as much of the history as I could. One of the most moving experiences in my life, was visiting the Arizona Memorial, seeing the names on the wall, and watching the oil ooze up to the surface. But I had never heard of the USS Utah, or if I had never toke note of her history or that she was at Pearl on that fateful day. One of the first casualties of the attack, her remains were left as they were, much like the Arizona. It actually took me some time to find it, as I was expecting the cache to be on the east side of Ford Island near the Arizona, I didn't realize anything was even on the west side. After nailing the cache, I must have spent over 2 hours reading the history of the USS Utah, and the details of the various missions she was on. She had quite the colorful history. I didn't know they used full sized battleships as remote control drones. Coincidentally, I spent the weekend planning a motorcycle trip to Utah later this summer, as I cross the state line I shall say a quiet prayer for the 58 sailors lost that day aboard BB-31.
6. Question about these cockpitless warbirds. The sounds in the deluxe aircraft are amazing. Engines, wind noise, rattles at high speed, wheels and brakes etc. How are the sounds in the warbirds? I haven't bought any, but the Corsair is one of my favorites and I may have to go for it. when you are "in" the aircraft, does it sound like it, or does it sound like when you open the canopy on the RV-6?
7. Sorry to hijack slightly. What's the difference between slipping and crabbing? I understand a slip to be left rudder countered with right aileron (or vice versa). Used to lose altitude and speed quickly. Crabbing is putting the nose into the wind but you still have to do the same crossed controls maneuver to maintain runway heading, at least thats how I do it.
8. After fondly recollecting my time with Buffalo Airways and sharing it with you all, I was very saddened to read this today: http://www.cbc.ca/news/arts/story/2012/05/07/north-arnie-schreder-dies.html Arnie had left Buffalo when I visited, but he certainly seemed like a stand up guy, and a legend in his own right in Canadian aviation. RIP Mr. Schreder
9. Bike was fine, I was only gone for the day. Never heard anything about the stolen gear, mine was one of 4 rooms that got broken into. I should not have left everything in the room, but it's a pain to pack up the bike everytime I want to leave the room. RCMP figure it was someone passing through town, as crimes like that are very rare in Dawson Creek, and stolen goods are not easily gotten rid of without someone recognizing it
10. That's the most painful part, my camera bag with DSLR, lenses, memory cards, backup drive, and laptop were stolen from my motel room in Dawson Creek on the way back. :( I spent an extra three days in Dawson Creek hoping the RCMP would be able to track it all down. I do daily dropbox backups when I travel now...
11. Last summer I rode my motorcycle to Yellowknife just to hop a ride on the "Sked" the daily scheduled DC-3 flight between Hay River and the 'Knife, piloted by non other than Living Legend Buffalo Joe himself. After the flight I managed a short conversation with Joe about my interest in aviation, and the fact that I rode from Vancouver just for that flight. He gave me a tour of the hanger and the interiors of the C-46, Electra, CL-215, and his Mk V Norseman. I got to hang out a bit and watch them do their stuff, not nearly as exciting as on the show though. However as an aviation geek, it was thrilling.
12. The day I met my father for the first time, we sat on that marker, shared a case of beer and a little pakalolo. But dont tell anyone that last bit.
13. I'm very sorry mi'lady... Gentlepeople, start your engines!
14. I've spent the last couple of days working on bettering my Challenge scores trying to get gold on as many as possible. Tonight I spent a good amount of time on Maule Landing Challenge 3, and after a couple of hours, the best I could do was bronze. Until of course I discovered that my engine wasn't on... Ooops. It seems that for whatever reason when I load that challenge, the engine is off. Now at first I thought it was SUPPOSED to be off, that was the challenge, dead stick in with gusting crosswinds. I even saw that message about your engine not running, press b to start and just thought it was there, same as when you run out of fuel, but I never actually pressed b. Not sure why I did just now, but once I did I was able to get just a few points short of gold. I'll revisit it again and go for gold, I'm tired of staring at mac nut trees! So, always make sure to try starting your engine!
15. Looks more like a taco stand to me. Do they have a "fly-thru"?
16. If you have already gotten an AOTD, does it show as checked so I don't have to waste my time looking for it again? I know the built in ones do, but I havn't seen checkmarks on the daily ones and I've definitely gotten some of the recent ones more than once.
17. Thanks for that, some interesting reading in there.
18. I was a beta tester for Flight, but at the time I didn't know about the beta forums. Where are these? I've searched the microsoft website but cannot find them. Also, has Alaska been released to beta testers yet? PM me if its not appropriate to respond in a public forum. Peter
19. Whodathunk the Flight bashing would be this bad? Like anything it needs time to mature.
20. Opps... haha, never thought of that! I guess I was trying to be "green" and not waste perfectly good aircraft.
21. Just don't lose your plane! I once exited the aircraft before closing Flight, then the next time I loaded it I started at a different airport. There I was, standing on the end of the runway with no aircraft. I had to go into map view and click on each airport and each runway until I found my plane again.
22. I get that too - flying low over western Kauai, then passing over the edge of Waimea canyon as it opens up and drops beneath you. Try it at dawn or dusk! Especially immersive on my 30" display!
23. I'm enjoying flight thoroughly for what it is. I see this first incarnation of Flight as the framework from what the rest of it will be built on. Its only been two months, and as others have mentioned the current DLC has been in the pipeline since before Flight was released. Give the devs a chance to see how the current batch of DLC is going, and for them to see the feedback regarding the lack of VC. Flight is an entirely new product, not as evolved as FSX, FS9, FS8 etc... Its going to take some time for it to mature, after all I'm pretty sure they didn't put all the work of adding nav aids, and very well modeled instruments for only a few planes, the deluxe planes will come, along with new areas and activities. Until then, I can be patient, there is a lot more to life than sitting on the MS Flight home page pressing refresh waiting for new content.
24. If they release a B-25 with a VC and a carrier to take off from Doolittle style, they can take whatever money they want! I haven't bought any cockpitless DLC, but I might go for a F4U Corsair.
25. Definitely go SSD. I bought a MacBook Air last year, and the SSD alone in it makes it faster and smoother than my new current model work MacBook Pro. I also put an Intel 320 SSD in my home windows PC and its like a different computer. Flight loads to the main menu in 14 second, and i'm flying 10 seconds after that. I'm not sure how much an improvement on the inflight performance an SSD would help with, as that would be more the graphics card & processor.
