  1. I would assume so. At night you have night textures, add to that all the lights and beacons and what not that have to be on as well at airports.
  2. No, FSX being a 32bit application cannot address more than 4GB of memory Actually, to amend my comment yes you should get more RAM, because then FSX has 4GB to itself and your system has access to the remaining 4
  3. I recently had to make this choice as well. I went with the 3570k, and its been excellent so far. Stable overclocked at 4.5Ghz with temps under 70c and getting smooth FPS almost everywhere with REX, PMDG 747, UT2 and FlyTampa/Aerosoft scenery. Of course you could push past 4.5 if you have a high end cooler, I'm using the Corsair H55 which gets the job done pretty well. Go with the 3570k. You don't need hyperthreading.
  4. Haven't tried yet, but I'd think it might take a hit in FPS
  5. After upgrading my i5-2500 to a 3750k CPU and overclocked to 4.5Ghz, I got a massive performance increase. This was at FlyTampas VHHX with UT2 on 80% density and REX Essential active. Please watch in HD and tell me what you think
  6. AffinityMask=14 for quad core without hyperthreading I believe
  7. Oh damn :( I have ultimate traffic 2, PMDGs 747, FlyTampas Dubai scenery (thats about it). Also have a tweaked FSX config from Bojotes tweaking site.
  8. Hello Further to my last post, I went ahead and got the 3570k and the Corsair H55 cooler. Last night I overclocked it to 4.5ghz and successfully tested it for stability, no problems it passed the stress test. But when I open up FSX and load up the PMDG 747 at somewhere like Dubai with 100% AI, it is wonderfully smooth at 30fps, no smoothness issues whatsoever but then a few minutes later it always crashes to desktop, and I'm not really sure why. I wondered if it was because I don't have enough RAM, but at 8GB I doubt its not enough RAM. Specs here if they help i5-3570k Oc'd @ 4.5gHZ Corsair Hydro H55 CPU cooler 8GB of DDR3 @ 1333mHZ Intel 330 series 120GB ssd 700W Coolermaster Xtreme PSU EVGA GTX670 2gb Thanks
  9. I would go for a beefier PSU (You never know when you might want to upgrade certain components - gives you good headroom), and swap out that graphics card for a GTX670, although the GTX660 should be perfectly sufficient. Also, in this day and age, an SSD is a must in a high powered gaming PC. Among the benefits being snappier texture loading for FSX and overall much faster boot and loading times. Otherwise, everything in that build looks great.
  10. Hey So after reading Word Not Allowed's hardware and software tweaking guide and applying those, I'm still getting under 5 frames per second on the ground at OMDB with FlyTampas addon, PMDGs 747 and UT2. It now seems my only other option is to upgrade my CPU, as I am aware that FSX is a heavily CPU reliant game. So my main questions are, would it be worth upgrading my stock i5-2500 to a factory unlocked i5 with the intention of overclocking to about 4.6ghz, and which i5 is best? I do not really want to spend the extra money on an i7, as I don't use any programs that need hyperthreading and don't usually have a lot of things open. Right now I was looking at a 3570k, which is about $300. What sort of speed would I achieve with this CPU when OC'd, and would it make any difference to FSX? As I said before, I'd rather keep it an i5, in case the 3570k isn't suitable. These are my specs: Intel i5-2500 / stock cooler 8GB of DDR3 RAM EVGA GTX670 FTW 2gb 120GB Intel 330 series SSD / 1TB WD hard drive Thanks!
  11. Since I bought Sony Vegas a while back intending to use it for FS2004 videos, I never actually did, since I found it all a bit daunting. However, I have had FSX for a while now, and I decided to make a video out of one of my flights. It would be very helpful if anyone could point me in the right direction as to what effects I need to use to make it look as good as the other ones on youtube..Anyway, hope you like it. part 2 coming soon.
  12. Update: Now using a FPS limiter I am getting a steady 30 fps at my home airport, Auckland International. However, at an airport such as LFPG or VHHX it dips to 15 fps or so..
  13. Noel...if you could give us a clue on how you get such performance on a dual core machine..that would be fabulous :)
  14. Thanks Word Not Allowed. By where I meant is there a specific place or order in the cfg it has to go?
  15. Would you be so kind sir as to share your secrets? :( My FPS drops right down to under the 10 range with full UT density and Mega airport for Schipol and Charles De Gaulle...
  16. Hey Word Not Allowed, as suggested I started with a new cfg by moving the current one and allowing FSX to regenerate one, however I can't find the BUFFERPOOLS section in the new one. Do I add it, and if so, where?
  17. Apologies, i meant 160 :). My flying school has C172Rs with 160hp Lycomings.
  18. At Schipol airport, with the PMDG 747, and with ultimate traffic set to 100% it drags right back to 13-15 fps..What kind of FPS increase would your guide give? I already tried that ventubo tool and it did increase my FPS a lot, however I don't think it should be this low, not with a Sandy Bridge 3.3-3.9ghz quad cpu, and a GTX570. \ Thank you for replying :)
  19. C172s are 162hp..
  20. Hello everyone First, please forgive my ignorance if this is posted in the wrong section, wasn't sure where else to post it. I am aware that hardware related issues are not allowed in this forum, but I don't think this is neccessarily an issue with my hardware. Once again, if its in the wrong section, please just move it to the right section, as I don't know where to post it, thanks :) I have the PMDG 747 for FSX, and this is where my problems start. On the ground at Kai Tak, with moderate traffic loaded, it drops down to 11-15fps. This is despite using the cfg tweaker link posted in the Avsim FSX forums. Don't get me wrong, it increased my FPS by 20-30, but my frames are just killed when I am flying the PMDG 747 at a major airport and traffic loaded. Of course, using a default plane doesn't kill the frames so much but I still think the performance should be well above what it is now, since I use a i5-2500 quad and a GTX570. thanks for reading
  21. I would like to express my deepest thanks to you sir, my GTX570 went from struggling to hold 25-30fps at Auckland Intl with all sliders on medium, to 60, yes. 60 FPS with all sliders to max and 80% traffic density. Thank you very much once again! I am very grateful for this!
  22. Speaking of 23L...cops love pinging people down there because everyone ignores the limit ;)
  23. just get out of the plane and have a dignified discussion with the other pilot just as you would in a minor car accident :)
