Happy Birthday- B747-400 First Flight!

Recommended Posts

Our beloved aeroplane is twenty years old today! I cannot begin to imagine the millions of miles she has flown, and the millions of people she has transported all over the world! My love affair with her began with Hardy Heinlin's superb PS1 (v 1.2) simulation on a 486 33mHz PC, which is where I first heard of Captain Mel Ott and heard "Rob" Randazzo as ATC. Now, so many years later, I am fortunate to fly my fat girl in a VC, using Mel's very own glareshield complement, and visiting albeit virtually, many of the destinations he used to wax so poetically on about. All these years and still, for me, nothing comes close to the 747-400. Happy Birthday our beloved Queen, long may you reign!Best-Carl F. I believe the only airframe loss in her history was the attempted takeoff from a closed runway at Chian Kai Shek in 2000. That's an incredible record.

Just checked on wiki.. there are a total of 2 losses... one was a new China Airlines that overshot the kai tak runway.. and ended up in the harbour..No losses of the 400 due to technical issues though by the looks of it..CheersCraig

I remember flying a Classic 747 to Jamaica when I was 6 getting invited to the flightdeck and telling the captain I knew what every switch does... then he pointed at section of the overhead and I just stood there with a blank look on my face :) 23 years later and I still dont understand the classic. {No losses of the 400 due to technical issues though by the looks of it}Qantus paid a LOT of money to keep that record.Carl I left you a message on the BAV forumRob

Hi Carl!I too spent many years flying the PS1 B744. She was a fantastic simulator for her era, though I am now very glad that my love affair with The Queen has transferred to PMDG-X on Vista. As soon as I can install the fixes due for PMDG, et al (incl. SB4), I shall be back with her online.Happy Anniversary B747-400, and well done Boeing.Cheers, Richard
