September 23, 200223 yr Great job Mike. :-beerchugThe controller doing the PAR was really top notch. I had total confidence in the guy.My only transgression was taxiing to R20 and not 02 at YEG. I was smirking so much at being jumped in front of 301, I made a left turn instead of right, which Ian so kindly pointed out to all :-lol ;)Oh yeh. For future reference my callsign is 'UNICORN 121' :-lol - Dean P3Dv4 & XP11 space
September 23, 200223 yr Hehe----and yes, I am once again accused of cheating by my good friend AAL327....let me reiterate....it was a manual landing form the moment Mike said "descend now".The easiest way to hear "Descending nicely" is this...IMHO!!For those of you chasing your V/S indicator and a compass/heading indicator while Mike is barking out 3 instructions per second...don't. Before the PAR takes control of you, set your MCP altitude to the PAR MDA/DH, V/S on the MCP to -700FPM, then set the HDG SEL to the heading you are on before you are told to "descend", assuming you are lined up for the runway. As the PAR atc calls new headings, change the HDG SEL. Simply chase (gently) the FD cues for HDG and V/S...if you are a little above the slope, increase your V/S to -900FPM until you are "on the glide, then change it back to -700FPM. Let the FD do the guesswork for you, chasing the V/S and compass will result in some of the screenshots above. The FD is the key to my success ;-)PS - Where the hell was Darryl Shuttleworth?
September 23, 200223 yr >Before the PAR takes >control of you, set your MCP altitude to the PAR MDA/DH, V/S >on the MCP to -700FPM, then set the HDG SEL [bla bla bla]>The FD is the key to my success ;-) http://www.eleventhstreet.com/pic/25.htmlhttp://www.eleventhstreet.com/pic/26.htmlSame page as you friend. Set my MCP altitude to the altitude he called out (1975?) and the V/S at -800 when he called descend now.I didn't dial in ANY frequencies for this approach, I just looked at my EADI and listened to Mike bark out the orders...>>PS - Where the hell was Darryl Shuttleworth? Good question - 3339 missed a good time - and we surely could have used his good humour .Ian (ACA301 at work LMAO).
September 23, 200223 yr Between Mike and Ian, the shots are a fantastic summary of a brilliant day of flying. As I said before, when's the next one?How about UK/Europe? Maybe Glasgow to London to Paris or Frankfurt? I know Paris is rarely open....just a suggestion...although another shot at a group PAR would be great as I am sure everyone got a thrill out of it, something out of the ordinary. Wonder if any of our friends at VATUK are real-world PAR qualified?Great stuff Mike! Can't thank you and the FIR's enough for putting this together.PS - I'll be happy to explain how one can hear the words "Descending Nicely" every time on a PAR....in a nut shell...chase the FD, not the instruments....although I am sure this is still cheating in somebody's mind ;-)Rob.
September 23, 200223 yr Commercial Member >PS - Where the hell was Darryl Shuttleworth? Daryl (D-A-R-Y-L) Shuttleworth (which is the correct spelling - test later)was taking a break with his sweetie at Harrison Hot Springs Resort, 2 hours northeast of Vancouver. Nice spot for float planes, but the 767 would be in trouble. As our due-date for the new arrival is January, I thought it might be a good idea to get away (without my two kids) BEFORE my partner doesn't want to travel... :)I got home in time to join the Cold Lake arrivals, but I really wasn't prepared with software etc. Sorry I missed the event (truly), but - hey - you guys know...DSCVA3339 The SUPPORT FORUM for Level-D Simulations products: http://www.leveldsim.com/forums
September 23, 200223 yr Looks like mine...except the A/T speed window says 180kts and you are on short final. I had mine set to 140kts at the 'descend now' point, flaps 25 until 1000 AGL (VApp+wind) and left the A/T on until I was 1000 AGL...was that wrong of me to do that ;-) ?? Not really cheating...A/P was OFF from 'descend now' onward.Rob.
September 23, 200223 yr You were missed! ...or were you afraid that if you came back, you would be taunted a second time?Good to see there are a few westerner's who know what good humour is, even if their priorities are completely mixed up....Harrison Hot Springs vs. a PIC fly-in...it's a no-brainer ;-)Kidding!Rob.
September 23, 200223 yr Dare-ill (note spelling),It's funny..All that time spent living in Calgary I took the abundant hot springs in every direction for granted. Don't even get me started on the mountains. You bringing up Hot Springs, and all of the comments from people like TABS regarding how sweet the mountains were between Cranbrook and Calgary have me thinking...Now I am stuck back in Winnipeg, closest Hot Springs are in Moose Jaw, SK (can you say "yee-haw", not!) and the only elevation change within 500KM of here besides the train tracks are the landfills. Not sure what I will do come ski season (what am I saying? It was 1C when I woke up - the Winnipeg Winter is upon me) - maybe I will take up Cross Country? No chance... Getting the Winter-Peg blues already...Ian Elchitz CYWG ---> Looking to get back to CYYC
September 23, 200223 yr >Looks like mine...except the A/T speed window says 180kts Weird....After you said that I took a closer look at my panel...If you look at the EADI you will notice that on the annunciator my I have NO A/T mode.I usually turn my A/T off at the same time as I lose the CMD mode.I guarantee you that I am not flying with the A/T (which would explain why I have 180 in the MCP yet I am only doing 147 and slowing).Yet - the A/T switch looks as if it is Clicked in the ARM mode (same thing in the previous screen shot)Very interesting...Ian.
September 23, 200223 yr That's what I was trying to figure out...if you were fighting the A/T on the way down...the switch does appear to be UP (on/armed)...but the SPD light is not on so whatever was in the MCP (A/T-speed) window would be ignored...oh well, one of those weird video/snap shot issues probably.Rob.
September 23, 200223 yr Thanks to the organizers, thanks to ATC,and thanks to all the pilots for making it a sucessful day. Lets hope this will be one of many PIC 767 meets now and in the future. robin.
September 24, 200223 yr Great pictures Mike and Ian. Its a pity I couldn't make this event but I had some real-world stuff to attend to last Sunday. The first and only time I did a PAR approach I literally broke out in a sweat. Now for the dummy questions; Mike, how do you reposition the Tower view?Ian, what screen capture utility are you using?
September 24, 200223 yr Rob,I asked the question about PAR controllers on the vatsim-uk ng, the answers I got back related more to PAR only for military, SAR for civil.No-one seemed to be skilled with the MOPAR s/ware though.I will keep my eye on the ng and if any good news emerges I will post back here or another thread in the forum.Rgds
