February 23, 200521 yr actually vinyl albums retain more acoustic information than CD's. DVI, although in theory superior, offers little image quality improvement over VGA in many cases.
February 23, 200521 yr Sorry but to say: "DVI, although in theory superior, offers little image quality improvement over VGA in many cases." This statement is total rubbish. I have a dell 2001 fp here and i can tell you that the difference between the DVI and Analog inputs is very great indeed.Do you have a LCD monitor and card with both outputs ? or are you just going by what you have read somewhere. There are still a few folk around who think that good LCD monitors show ghosting in games this is another common myth.
February 23, 200521 yr Ah, sounds like we have may have some 21" flatscreen CRTs for sale at a bargin. I will buy at used price if you wish to sell. The lcd can only achieve, at best, what I currently have on my crt. Ask some people who use photoshop and make a living by getting the colors and contrast correct for money. After you calibrate your lcd to the system you had better set at the same position everytime you adjust color and contrast of your work. ;-)But for flightsimmers, they take less room and are neat to list in the "mines bigger then yours" hardware profile.Contact me if you would like to sell your 21" flatsceen out of the house. ;-)[email protected],BobSHave a K&E and can use it anyplace for good answers.
February 23, 200521 yr rubbish? how about "needs qualifying ;-) "I work in an environment where we have LCDs using both DVI and VGA and can tell you that sometimes DVI is better quality ... sometimes there is no difference at all. Other things you could considerYour graphic card may have an inferior VGA output compared to it's DVI output so your comparison is nothing to do with the monitor. Then again, your monitor's DVI input circuitry may be inferior to it's VGA.But consider that while DVI is indeed superior many combinations of monitors/graphics cards and I'm please to hear your is such, in many setups the difference is marginal.Ghosting on LCD's is not a myth either - just overstated.ho hum
February 24, 200521 yr Just curious...do any of you guys with LCD's get ANY "flashing" from areas of certain textures, especially trees? I've tried FS9 on two different LCD's, A viewsonic VX900 (19") and a Sharp 19". Same problem on both...the picture is GREAT until about 2000'. Then I start getting texture flashing from the aforementioned areas until about 5000'. One monitor has a 25ms response time and the other a 16ms response time.Native Res is 1280 X 1024. I'm using a Geforce 6800 256 meg card. Any suggestions? Thanks!Mark
February 24, 200521 yr Author Have done limited flying/testing. Ask me in another 2 weeks. Right now I am in a "honeymoon phase" and even though there are some small visual imperfections with things like clouds, I honestly am not caring about them enough to "report" them. I figure any system with any hardware has some type of imperfection. Right now, this LCD can't do anything to irritate or disappoint me in any way. I'll post an update on this LCD in a few more weeks.JS Jonathan Sacks Dell XPS Gen 4, Pentium IV Northwood extreme 3.8Ghz, 3Ghz RAM, eVGA 7900 GTO, 12 GoFlight modules plus MCP-PRO AP and EFIS, GF pedestal, CH rudder pedals, CH throttle quadrant, 42" LG LED, 24" DELL LCD, Windows XP, FS2004, FSUIPC 3.96 FS Autostart 1.1 (Build 11), FS Navigator 4.6, UT, FE, GE, REX, PMDG, Level-D, PSS, etc.
February 24, 200521 yr >Two things I have heard with LCDs is 1) Ghosting win panning>or moving quickly about and 2)You cannot achieve true Black. >Maybe that is only with the first generations but could you>guys verify those are no longer an issue?Just made the switch to a 17" LCD acer when i built my new system in dec. Black is not as great on the lcd as it was with the crt. There are certain LCD's though, that do look as great as a CRT. Picture is so much more brighter and clear.I will say at first, i wanted my crt back, and i was taking this lcd back to the store, but after a few days, i loved it and still do. Its just that change that you go through. I love the lcd i have, and would highly reccomend looking at them when in the market for a new monitor. When i buy a new one, i will be looking at the samsung 19" most likely. Many people have samsung's, and from what i have heard, they are about as good as they come. Price's can vary on them though.Wouldnt trade mine at all. Chase Barnett
February 24, 200521 yr I have a ATI Radeon 9600XT 128MB and a 17" Acer AL1711 LCD monitor. My monitor does not have a DVI cord. By standard, it is a VGA. If i buy a converter for it to run from the DVI, will i loose any performance? Chase Barnett
February 25, 200521 yr Hi Chase, IMHO, it's not worth it. Afaik, the primary VGA output usually produces the nicer VGA-image than the secondary VGA (through DVI), specially at higher resolutions than 1024x. Thus my fear would be, you'ld loose image quality. On the other hand, performance shouldn't be a prob and equal to what you're getting now. Case you do it, please report back about your impressions. Hope this answers your question a bit, good luck and kind regards Jaap
February 26, 200521 yr Hi jaap, thanks for your response and assistance again. You helped me out so much in december when i was trying to build my new system on the budget (specs below)So if my monitor come from the factory VGA equipped, its better to stay with VGA? And if i use the converter and switch to DVI, i could loose img quality? Let me know if i got it right.PS. If you havent started online flying yet, lets give it ashot. I would really like to fly with you sometime. :):-wave Chase Barnett
