TrackIR -- is it worth it?

Featured Replies

I'm aware there is a "wow" factor with TrackIR, but does anyone have anything bad to say about it? I just can't picture getting a convincing experience if I'm having to move my eyeballs in an unnatural direction in order to see the immobile screen.Surprisingly I thought TrackIR was a pair of goggles until I Googled some pictures of how it's installed. The other thing holding me back is that I only have a Celeron/3.2 Ghz/1 GB/AGP 6600GT 256K and my frame rates seem to dip to the 10-15 fps range when using the LD767 VC cockpit. So there's a tradeoff... then you factor in the price of the TrackIR and my decision goes from neutral to negative. Maybe if there was some way to squeeze more fps out of the VC or FS2004 I'd warm up to it more, but I have no idea if I'm even bottlenecked in the motherboard or on the video card.Tim

I like it very much, only problem for me was that it was difficult to change radios, autopilot etc. with mouse while using Track IR, but there are at least 2 way to help.1. set up hot key like "ANY KEY" to pause IR TRACKINGor2. what I chose was to download a voice recognition software and invested extra few dollars for plantronics head set (DSP500) and now use voice to change radios etc.OPT 2 IS GREAT works about 95% without failure, I just tough the program easy commands for example to change heading on autopilot I say HEADING (little pause here the voice "in my imagination co-pilot") repeats "HEADING" then I say ONE THREE ZERO for example with a short pause between each word ONE THREE ZERO about a second of pause or so (voice in software repeats all I said that's where the second of pause come in this way I am sure it copied my instruction)... anyways voice recognition software is free only the headphones costed extra ... Do not buy voice recognition software ain't worth it in my oppinion...BACK TO IR TRACKER.. you make a very little turn of your head in order to look around, so the EYES FACTOR you worry about is almost not noticeable at all !!! You can look behind you just turning head maybe 10 degrees.. well I do not have a ruler on my head to know if it's 10 or 15 deg, but very little and the result is much more, and also it is pretty smooth and not super fast at all.OTHER drawback "matter of getting used to it" is at first when I taxied I wanted to turn the aircraft with my head , but slowly I got used to the fact is only for watching not for steering HAHA... it gives a great deal of help almost all the time I LOVE IT!!! and the 2 little drawbacks I mention is about it.First one you can work around it... second is just what happened to me matter of getting used to it.Also there are some setting withing the track IR software that allows you to configure thing just the way you like it..I have no performance decrease because of the program! FYI P4-3GHz with X850PROHOPE IT HELPSAndyPS: I think it's well worth it!!! EVERY DOLLAR I am very happy with it.PSS: Other drawback is you have to wear a cup or you could glue the tracking thing to your forehead... well I wear a cup, it's drawback for me I hate head wear of any kind LOL

As Andy states, your actual head movement is very small and it is very easy to get used to. I get pretty low FPS in the 737NG VC, but it is still OK to use TrackIR with this aircraft. One thing I have found TrackIR has done for me is to fly GA aircraft a whole lot more, and even the stock DC-3 is fun to fly this way!The only complaint I have is that at some head angles with my head dead still the display jerks a little, making it hard to click buttons, turn knobs etc. Andy's idea of using a key to pause TrackIR until you've made your selection is something I should try. I suspect this will be a suitable workaround for this issue.Overall, I am very happy with my TrackIR purchase and just now hope that FSX supports it properly (at this stage of FSX development, the FSX demo does not).Gary

In a word...YES.

I concur with all the others. Head movement while trying to click a switch or change knobs can be a problem. If the AC has VC and popup windows, I use the popups instead. This works on several planes, e.g MAAM DC3. Anothr trick is move your head in closer to the screen enlarging the panel and it is easier to adjust knobs or move switches.Hate flying without mine.Jim

Personally, I'd say NO. Don't get me wrong...it's a good product and very interesting to say the least. I find it more trouble to use a Baseball hat, or reflective dots, stay relatively still or straight during flight, and it certainly DOES affect my frames...regardless of what I read before purchasing it.I'd rather use the hat control on my joystick, and Active Camera for smooth panning around cockpit and in spot view. It's way more comfortable for me, and I can move around wherever I want to move.I haven't used my Track IR4 for months, and I probably will sell it on E-Bay.Just my personal opionion. Stan

I have both Active Camera and TrackIR4, and there's no comparison in-cockpit - TrackIR beats AC into a cocked baseball hat for functionality. But AC is still a superb addon for outside views. To see if you'd like what TrackIR can bring to your flying experience, make your twistgrip control on your joystick into a panning tool rather than a rudder. You can still use the hat switch to pan-and-stick, but the pan-and-return of the twist control gives a clue what TIR offers. The real advantage to TrackIR is the ability to look before you turn, allowing you to `lead` your turns from base onto final with much greater accuracy, or to look round a centrepost that is blocking the view, or to scan for other traffic. It just shows that we all have different outlooks. For me, it helps simulate what I experience in real flight. When you fly a real aircraft, your head is "on a swivel" and you need to be able to glance around without thinking too much about it. For me, the TIR helps me simulate that real flying, and so I make the comparison. Personally, I have never used the 2D pit, so the TIR fit well for me. As long as you enjoy how you fly, that's what counts. :-)

Spilok I will buy it from you if you have a good price for it :). I have TrackIR 3 PRO already but It doesn

Track IR would be very tolerable for me if it didn't affect frames as much as it does. Are you saying that there is no noticeable difference in your frames or the "jerkiness" of movement when you use Track IR vs. Active Camera alone? Stan

spilok I have never had that. Having TrackIr and active camera at the same time I had to disable the Active camera head latency since it

Yes..I have the latest software.I think I'll give it a try WITHOUT the MSFF2 joystick. I'll try it with the Cyborg 3D Gold stick I've been using with FSX.Thanks, Stan

Been using TrackIR since the original and now I have the version 4. I have never noticed any performance impact at all, on any of the 3 hardware configurations that I've used over that period.

As for head movement, you can add a "dead zone" that will allow you to make small movements of your head, without it affecting cockpit view. In general, I have not seen the TrackIR cause a frame rate drop in most games, and usually if it does it tends to be related to other applications running and not specific to the TrackIR.
