Should I increase RAM from 1GB to 2GB?

Featured Replies

Guys,All of you who are saying 4 gigs I have a question for you. What O/S are you running? Everyone in here realizes that Windows XP does not handle 4 gigs of memory correctly right? I mean I just want to make sure we are all on the same page here because if you add 4 gigs to a standard XP system you will see anywhere between 2.75 gigs and 3.5 gigs. No XP system will even show 4 gigs with 4 gigs installed due to a memory limitation in XP. If you are running XP-64 which supports more physical memory and a larger swap file that XP or even Vista Beta then fine but 4 gigs on a standard XP system doesn't buy you anything. So for most people 4 gigs is an absolute waste. Thanks for bringing some sanity Gary, 2 gigs is just plenty folks. Also, make sure it is two gigs of GOOD low latency RAM. I would take less of a faster RAM than more of a slower RAM anyday.JS, if it was me, yes I would scrap the 512 sticks and go with 2x1gig matched pair. Also,The most I have ever seen FS use is ~ 1.2-1.3 gigs of memory. This is with FS, PMDG 744, FS2Crew for PMDG, UTUSA, GE, FsPassengers and ImagineSim KEWR around NYC LOL. FS runs base at ~ 250 megs of memory usage. so it is all about the add-ons...-Paul

Paul:It's gonna be really costly to do two sticks of 1GB but I sorta feel it would be a better way to go than two more sticks of 512 mesself. Wow, the cost of upgrading--I am also getting TrackIR4 Pro this weekend--and expanding my FS9 setup is gonna reach the sky, hah!JS

Hey, Paul:DELL says that if they sell me their RAM sticks, it's covered under my existing XPS warranty. They do 1GB sticks. But CRUCIAL also does great RAM I've used in years past on other DELLs.Whose 1GB RAM should I purchase? Thanks!JS

Hey JS,All of the independant memory manufacturers offer warranties as well. Corsair XMS gives a lifetime no questions asked warranty. I am sure Crucial does the same. Save the 2x512 and if you ever need to do anything with DELL throw the stock memory back in first. Just like a car, you switch the chip and the aftermarket parts out before you take it back to the dealer :)I would go with the aftermarket memory. Look for the lowest latency possible. I run my memory at 2 3 2 6 and you REALLY want 1T instead of 2T if you are running 2 gigs. Trust me, not all memory is the same and the low latency sticks make a significant difference,Good luck, feel free to e-mail me with the sticks you are looking at and I can help you narrow it down or just post it here, there are a lot of guys who will give you great info, just be wary of listening to everything you read. These 4 gig recomendations for example are way off. Once you up to two gigs, unless you have two seperate hard drives, just leave your virtual memory as system managed as well.-PaulPrimary RigLiquid CooledAMD FX-57 @ 3 gigsAsus A8NSLI-Premium2 gigs Corsair XMS PC3500LL 2 3 2 6 1TXFX 7900 GTX 690/1750XFX 7800 GTX 515/135024 inch Widescreen LCDDual 19 inch LCD'sRaid-0+1PCPower and Cooling 1khttp://home.comcast.net/~psolk/3monitorsa.htmlBackup RigAMD 4000 San Diego @ 2.72 Gigs Kingston Corsair XMS CL2XFX 7800 GTX 515/1350 Raid-0psolk.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/157291.jpg

Paul:Beautiful stuff, mate, thanks!Will look carefully and limit to 2GB max. (I thought 4GB was a bit nuts anyway).What a fantastic set-up you have for FS9, wow!Cheers for now,JS

I think also the fastest set up is a single, matched pair. At this point I think that is pretty much limited to 2x1GB. I see you could pick up a 2x1G pair of OCZ PC-5300 EL Gold with 4-4-4-12 for $165 with rebate from Tiger Direct.scott s..

Will VISTA take advantage of 4 gigs? Stan

Oh yeah
