New PC and wow!

Featured Replies

Got a new PC last week and it just kills FSX. I'm running all my setting at about 75% and getting good smooth frames. Around 30-40 in Cities and 60 or 70 at altitude or over country areas and ocean. I've not tweaked and cfg files so I am really happy with FSX. Looking forward to SP! :)

G'day Pete,Congrats on your new machine. Yet so many people refuse to believe FSX runs quite well when you have a decent system. Have fun!

Right . . and righter still! How about $120 for those e4300 combos Frys has all the time. The ECS Mobo the 4300 comes with will let you swap over your old PC3200 ram and that old 6800 AGP Vcard. The E6600 runs at 2.4? Heck, just turn that little ol' e4300 up to 3.2ghz and bump those sliders up another knotch. FSX is so CPU limited, bet an old AGP, 6800'd do just fine.

> FSX is so CPU limited,>bet an old AGP, 6800'd do just fine. Better watch out Sam, I said the same thing and got flamed by a user named 'tasmanet' for it here.Actually what I said was even less "outrageous". I said the lower-end 8000-series gfx cards would, if they had enough vid mem, do almost as well as the 8800GT/GTX in FS...RhettAMD 3700+ (@2310 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 2.5-3-3-8 (1T), WD 250 gig 7200 rpm SATA2, CoolerMaster Praetorian case

Yea, I know. A lot of it has to do with what folks already own, We had a great discussion about Raid vs Raptors a couple threads over. I like the raid ('cuse I got one) and the Raptor boys came on strong . . . and were making some really good points. The discussion seemed to come down to "How many zillions of bucks should one be willing to spend to get that last 5% of potential performance?" My argument is that the smart money (i.e., poo folks, like me!)would be better served to leave that last 5% of performance on the table. Leave braggin' rights to the rich guys. I'd rather have a shiny new 22 inch monitor. I expect the Vcard discussion would follow the same path. But the best part about all this is that it really gets folks thinkin' 'bout stuff. For instance, I finally looked up a review on this MoBo. Actually, I seemed like the OCWorkbench guys ran that MoBo right on up to its 300mhz FSB limit with no problem. On the other hand, the Anandteck folks were trying pin mod stuff. That's way too hard for me. I read an article in the Journal today about Warren Buffet, ubber investor and 2nd richest man in the world. (behind our pal, Bill). He has a box on his office desk labeled "TOO HARD." Makes sense to me too. Just turn up the FSB. It seems the PCI buss is autolocked so that's not an issue. http://www.ocworkbench.com/2006/ecs/P4M800PRO-M-V2.0/g1.htmWhile that 4300 certainly has the potential to go to 3.4+ (on very good air), this mobo will only allow a 9 (E4300's multiplier) X 300 (new FSB) = 2.7 ghz O/C. Frys has been doing some magic with CPU prices lately. Last week, the E6600 was offered at $199. Almost jumped, but the Q6600 is gonna go from $550 to $250 day that AMD launches their Barcalona Quad. The Bearlake (Intel's new "PXX" series chipset) is out in a month . . . and in 2 months, we get a processing double for 50 bucks? I wish they'd just stop so I could buy a computer! This is SO hard to not wait for. . . . but in the mean time, turning my investment in an out-dated P4 / PC3200 ram /"ol' trusty" power supply/ AGP Vcard / EIDE optical + HDD drive set / + metal box into a modern 3.0 ghz, C2D "second computer" for a hundred bucks? That'd be something a poo folk (oops, I mean smart money) might consider.

I wonder what arethe true minimum requirements? What is required to make FSX better than FS9?One thing in particular strikes me, You got 4 Gb RAM but what about 2 Gb? Also what about using Win XP instead of Win Vista which should gain some performence.BTW my system maybe could be considered as an absolute minimum,Athlon 64 3200+1 Gb RAM 400 MHzNVIDIA 6600GT 256M DDR3 AGP2 * 160 Gb in raid 0 in SATAI speed.

>Yet so many people refuse to believe FSX runs quite well when>you have a decent system. Have fun!Add the full cadre of PMDG birds and scenery enhancements, and voila! Somewhat stunted performance. Or so it seems from what I read as I haven't made the move yet. Holding off til a major system upgrade late fall to early next year.Noel

That quad core Q6600 is going to drop to $266 in a couple of months. Intel also has their Skulltrail Mobo in the works. It's supposed to be their Nuclear response to AMD's Barcelona quaddie. The Skulltrail (what a name . . . it's easy to see Intel's a bit new to this enthusiast stuff) will support 2 quad cores. There's lots of hope it will support the less expensive Core2s rather than the megabuck Xeons. If it ends up supporting Qcore2s, an extra $250 (on top of a normal system build) will get cha an Octi-core system . . . in 3-4 months. 8 cores. Surely that'll be enough! Oh please!!
