April 2007 update for DirectX 9.0c: might help with SP1 stuttering

Featured Replies

If you haven't updated DirectX 9.0c lately, try this. It might help with SP1 stuttering:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...00-F0FB2A71E99FThis was suggested by Don Burnette on another forum. It may have been mentioned here, too, but if so I missed it. NB: create a system restore point before you install the update; DirectX updates can't be uninstalled. My experience:1. First flight with SP1 was good: everything felt smoother. Didn't play with settings at all.2. Day two: I increase autogen from Normal to Dense. Cool! But I notice more blurries and stuttering. Frustration! System restore back to pre-SP1: stuttering is gone, so I reason that it's a consequence of SP1. (Can anyone spot the problem in my logic here?)3. Last night I install DirectX 9.0 update. This morning I reinstall SP1. Create system restore points before both! Leave all settings as they were in my pre-SP1 install.4. In my 20-minute test flight, I did NOT notice the blurries and stutters that I associated with SP1 the day before. My test flight: Cannes to Nice and back, ActiveSky weather, low-altitude, about 220 KIAS in Flight Replicas Me-109G. This was probably my best flight with the 109G ever. Partly I'm getting better at handling it, but framerates were consistently higher, with smooth panning in spot view and VC.Conclusions:1. I would like to announce that DirectX 9.0c update is the magic bullet. Stutters be gone! 2. Or it could just be that I left autogen at previous level... Or I was just lucky on this one flight.Specs: Core2Duo E6600 (stock speed), 2 Gb 800MHz RAM, Nvidia 7600 GS (512 Mb), WinXP Pro SP2. A bunch of controllers and TrackIR. ActiveSky 6.5 (using current beta of FSUIPC, free version).Tweaks: + reduced default.xml+ TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_TREES_PER_CELL=3000 // default 4500, max 6000+ TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_BUILDINGS_PER_CELL=1500 // default 3000, max 6000+ Flight Environment 2004 clouds (I've been using the "Tester's favorite" set since October)FPS target: 20. (Yes, I could go higher but that's where I had it set before SP1. The difference: I stay closer to my target with SP1.)

sounds promising, I am interested to see how many will confirm this.I am downloading the DX9 red. right now ...

This is interesting indeed. I downloaded the latest update and installed it when it first was available, however, when reinstalling FSX when SP1 was released a few days ago, I noticed that FSX installs DX9C when the program gets installed. I wonder if it overwrites the latest version with the version that comes with FSX out of the box, or bypasses this part if it sees a more up to date version? I am curious if we can reinstall the latest update over itself without any problems just in case. Something to think about.

Yeh, I'm also interested to learn which DX version is installed on my system. I installed several DX updates, but haven't learnt how to check the installed version? Thanks.

yes, but I'm not sure that changed (I didn't pay that close attention, but I swear thats what it was before the update). If you look in the dx files section I see there are a bunch of files with modified dates from March or April of 2007 after installing that update. Sort by modified time and make sure you have those.

I was pretty skeptical of this one, and shortly after leaving the airport I was seeing some blurries and thought "nope". Buuuuttt... as I kept flying (~150 KTS), the tiles seemed to be keeping up quite well, actually. After ~20 minutes, I was pretty satisfied. However, I have still been tweaking settings and had already got the blurries to a semi-acceptable point-- so while I do think this may have been better, I also think perhaps maybe I've also finally managed to strike the right balance with my settings.Solar? Ryan? Since our systems all seem to be pretty similar, give this a shot, maybe? My current settings:Medium LODTEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=40UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT=20PerfBucket=7SWAP_WAIT_TIMEOUT=30FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.5PoolSize=5000000Anti-virus disabledA64 2.2GHz2 Gigs8800 GTS

Tomas,What finally changed the FSX performance for you?Tero

>Tomas,>>What finally changed the FSX performance for you?>>TeroHello Tero! It was my fps limit slider, because I had always in 25 instead unlimited a difference with FS2004...After it, Im flying with ALL to MAX about 30 upto 50 fps!!!! in whole FS world! Im added {JOBSCHEDULER} for my four cores processor, it helped to me with those temporal stutters while flying, I haven't got blurrys.Very satisfied and happy mate!Regards!

Good to hear you got it sorted :). Happy flying!Tero

Yeah the only thing you have is a much better video card (I would think it would help with the texture loading)...is that the 640mb GTS version? So you did install the April DX version? Where do I put that medium LOD thing...is that a setting FSX or the .cfg file?

Yes, 640 mb card... but I'm actually skeptical that affects this issue.Yes, I installed the April DX update... that's what I wanted you to try-- since I had already got blurries to an *okay* state, I wasn't sure if my success in my last test was from my tweaks or the DX update.I mean medium detail radius on the scenery tab. But don't change your current settings for now. Just try the DX update first.
