My First Impressions of new ASUS EAH3870 X2

Featured Replies

Well........I'm absolutley astonished with the performance of this 3870x2 as compared to my 8800GTX.The visual quality is just awesome with the 3870X2 as well as the fluidity of FSX. Per the FPS counter I have lost a few FPS. However, FSX runs so much smoother with this card my initial perception (prior to turning on the FPS counter) was that I gained some FPS.The biggest thing of all, the card/drivers are rock solid. All those pain in the arse random crashes are a thing of the past. I can now defintely attribute those headaches to the Nvidia drivers.I had some reservations purchasing this ATI card because I haven't owned one in years. I really didn't want to spend the money but it was well worth it and I am very glad that I did.

I have got one of these as well, and all I can say, is that I am very happy with it so far.

I'm delighted to hear your comments as I have just ordered a new system with an ASUS EAH3870 X2 1GB! which I should have in 2/3 weeks.I notice that you are running at 1920 x 1200 does it handle that OK? I haven't sorted out which monitor yet ( I currently have 2 x 19")John

John,It handles 1920x1200 just fine.

Welcome to the club! I haven't had the chance to see how FSX looks through a 8800 but it would be difficult for the quality of the 3870X2 to be beaten. What drivers are you currently using? I'm on the Catalyst 8.2.

Ray, what kind of PS are you running? I think I might be on the edge for a 3870x2 but I'm not sure. I have a high quality 750W . . .Noel

Noel,You've got bags to spare. I have a Corsair HX620 - 620 watts. My other hardware is 2 HDs and a DVD/CD writer.

Ray,I'm using the 8.3 Hotfix drivers ATM.

  • Moderator

Have you noticed any improvement over the 8.2? I've tried the full 8.3 drivers from here http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst...p=xp/radeonx-xp but didn't see any improvement over 8.2 and in 3Dmark06 it got around 8500 compared to over 12000 with 8.2.I'm assuming the official 8.3 drivers are the same as the hotfix ones?

happy to hear that ATI is back at it :). So crossfire works better then SLI I presume in FSX? Otherwise if you look at tomshardware benchies there is quite a few fps you loose on an GTX and well they get no improvements from the second core.I do have an 8800 GTX and it

Par,If you're going to run at such low resolutions ;-) I wouldn't bother with the 3870X2. The card comes into its own at very high resolutions when that extra memory can be utilised.Stick with your 8800 :-)

Ray,There is a difference between the 8.3 Hotfix drivers and the standard 8.3 Catalyst drivers. Exactly what it is I do not know. All I know is the hotfix is supposed to address an issue with stutters (of which I've seen none).

  • Moderator

Ah! I do have the stutters and it's been driving me mad trying to identify what's causing them.Do you have a link to the HotFix drivers please?
