e8500 Overclock .......

Featured Replies

Many of you will remember the last thread.....using my Gigabyte P35 DS3R board with F11 BIOS, I was able to achieve a 24hour Prime95 stable OC at 4.0ghz. Currently my system sits there 24/7 and there are no issues.Doing some further research, I keep seeing the 4.3ghz is possible with this chip (perhaps not with my board). I do have some reservations about adding to the vcore (currently at 1.43750v). My FSB is at 421. I am using a Tuniq 120 for cooling, and am getting the following in FS-TEMP 0/1- 41/36 ; CORE 0/1- 47/51 or 52I'm wondering why in Prime95 core 1 (not core 0) is ALWAYS hotter by about 5 degrees Celsius? BTW the HOTTEST ever recorded in Prime95 and ORTHOS was 70C on the CORE for Core 1 (not Core 0).Obviously in FS my temps are totally ok. That said, Intel's Spec Finder says CPU voltage 0.85V

>>My MB has a P35 chipset so this is not apples to apples- but>is anyone out there running the e8500 at 4.2 or 4.3 on air>with a P35 chipset?>I don't have an E8500; but from what I've seen, I think if you had an X38/X48 board it would give a better chance to run at 4.2-4.3.4.2-4.3 is getting up there. Your voltage is getting up there. Looks like your FSB could go higher, but that might depend on the motherboard/motherboard chipset. How's your northbridge cooling?>Anyway, stable for a couple of weeks so- so here I go wanting>to fix what isn't broken ;)- I could definitely live with>4.0ghz until the unlocked Quads are cheap (8-12months out I>think).....thoughts?>My thoughts are that unlocked quads will never be cheap. That's Intel's marketing strategy--pay for unlocked multi, and in the meantime, keep it at or near the $1000 price point.I think 4.0 ghz Prime stable is plenty good; you have probably reached the point of diminishing returns...in terms of cpu voltage/power vs. performance and stability.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2585 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2gb Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8 (1T), WD 150 gig 10000rpm Raptor, WD 250gig 7200rpm SATA2, Seagate 120gb 5400 rpm external HD, CoolerMaster Praetorian

I must ask, are you able to fly near large cities with decent performance with that OC? I'm still limited to around 10-12 FPS in large cities and airports. I'm curious what kind of perf you get with that CPU?

Ryan:Yes! In FS9 I am locked at 48FPS (PMDG 747) and in FSX I am locked at 28 with the PMDG- very enjoyable and flyable. I fly for BA Virtual so I am constantly in and out of EGLL, and use the Aerosoft Heathrow scenery without issue. Hope this is helpful.Best-Carl F. That is awesome! Glad it is working for you!Eventually, (prolly when the next FS comes out lol) I'll upgrade so I can play FSX well. I mean, the AMD6000 does hold its own, but nowhere near 4Ghz you have :)

I will let you know ;)I had ordered the Asus P5K64 with 2 gigs of OCZ Reaper DDR3/1333 because of the 4xPCIE 16x the P5K advertised but it is actually 1-16x and then 3@4,4,4 so one of my Dual 8800GTX would be cut down to 4x. Not to mention the layout of the board is wrong for my SLI waterblock so I never even installed it.SOOOOO instead....I spent the night on NewEgg and just ordered the Asus Maximus Extreme.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813131235This is built on the X38 chipset so I will get two full 16X PCIE channels which is the real benefit of X38. (I don't actually run my dual 8800GTX in SLI, I just utilize an SLI waterblock)The added benefit is that they are "supposed" to be an overclockers dream. This board even has a water block built into it which is simply awesome. It will be here Friday. I have been running Acronis all day backing up all my systems so I am all ready to go. I am just going to do a Universal restore, install the new drivers and I will report back ASAP!Cheers,-PaulPrimary Rig (Being upgraded AGAIN!)Liquid CooledIntel C2D [email protected] /25CAsus P5N32SLI-Plus2 gigs Corsair XMS PC6400 4 4 4 12 @936Dual OC'd XFX 8800GTX @ 2 gigs24 inch Widescreen LCD 16XAA/16XAFDual 19 inch LCD'sRaid-0+1PCPower and Cooling 1kWSR Quad SLIhttp://home.comcast.net/~psolk/3monitorsa.htmlBackup RigAMD 4000 San Diego @ 2.72 Gigs Kingston Corsair XMS CL2XFX 7900 GTX Raid-0psolk.jpg

Hey Carl,See my other post "Wow, What a Motherboard" It is either the Chipset or the memory IMHO... I went to the X38 and DDR3 1333 and it literally unleashed this processor... I went from 3.8, 3.7 stable to 4.45 and 4.25 stable... That is without making a 2nd voltage adjustment to anything so considering I am @ around 50C under full load I think there is more in her...-PPrimary RigLiquid CooledIntel C2D E8500 445X9.5 @ 4.25Asus Maximus Extreme2 gigs OCZ Reaper DDR3 1333Dual OC'd XFX 8800GTX @ 2 gigs24 inch Widescreen LCD 16XAA/16XAFDual 19 inch LCD'sRaid-0+1PCPower and Cooling 1k Quad SLIhttp://home.comcast.net/~psolk/3monitorsa.htmlBackup RigAMD 4000 San Diego @ 2.72 Gigs Kingston Corsair XMS CL2XFX 7900 GTX Raid-0psolk.jpg

You could probably push it higher with more voltage tweaks though.I don't know, but I suspect those guys running 4.2-4.3 ghz are using the X38 chipset and probably DDR3. Or at least DDR2 1066 or something like that.Let me tell you though, if you're getting 25-30 fps with the Heathrow scenery in FSX, you're doing just fine. :) Don't think you need that .1 or .2 ghz really.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2585 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2gb Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8 (1T), WD 150 gig 10000rpm Raptor, WD 250gig 7200rpm SATA2, Seagate 120gb 5400 rpm external HD, CoolerMaster Praetorian

Carl if I may ask...How are the blurries with the E8500 cpu? Do you run ActiveSky, etc.?I am debating with myself, whether or not I get an E8500, or a Q9450 (quad). I realize the pro's and con's of each as it relates to FS.My only question is, if I run ActiveSky and FSX, will I want the faster, highly overclockable dualie or the slower, less overclockable quad?RhettAMD 3700+ (@2585 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2gb Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8 (1T), WD 150 gig 10000rpm Raptor, WD 250gig 7200rpm SATA2, Seagate 120gb 5400 rpm external HD, CoolerMaster Praetorian
