May 5, 200818 yr Well, I just upgraded my UD to this new version. I've only run it twice so I can't give a full analysis.I must say, it sure seems considerably faster than the old version. The interface is similar, but slightly different--I'm not sure if I like the colorful look.Functionally, it seems to have all of the same options. I've already used it to optimize my new FSX installation on a Vista64 box.RhettE8500, Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, ASUS P5E3 Premium, BFG 8800GTX 756 (nVidia 169 WHQL), 4gb DDR3 1600 Patriot Cas7 7-7-7-20 (2T), PC Power 750, WD 150gb 10000rpm Raptor, Seagate 500gb, Silverstone TJ09 case, Vista Ultimate 64 Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
May 5, 200818 yr Author For some strange reason no matter what defrag method I use with UD08 I still show 16-25% degree of fragmentation although when I right click the drive and check the volume it only shows 3 fragmented files?? Is this a bug because if I check using another defrag program it shows less then 1% fragmentation and everything does seem to be running better after using UD08. I have a Vista32 system and the fragmented files are $MFT, System volume info & $extend$USNjrnl:$J:$DATA. May 5, 200818 yr I have not noticed that. I'll pay closer attention next time I am running it.It seemed like my UltimateDefrag08 took me down to 0% fragmented because it was at 45% after I installed the OS and FSX. First I did CONSOLIDATE and then after that I did FRAGMENTED FILES.RhettE8500, Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, ASUS P5E3 Premium, BFG 8800GTX 756 (nVidia 169 WHQL), 4gb DDR3 1600 Patriot Cas7 7-7-7-20 (2T), PC Power 750, WD 150gb 10000rpm Raptor, Seagate 500gb, Silverstone TJ09 case, Vista Ultimate 64 Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
May 5, 200818 yr Author > First I did CONSOLIDATE and then after that I did>FRAGMENTED FILES.That's what I did too but I'm still showing 17% although I only have 3 fragmented files...wierd!UPDATE: I got this answer at another forum.Regarding 12..14% of fragmentation remaining - this may be because of some fragmented system-locked files (pagefile.sys, hyberfile.sys, $MFT::$BITMAP etc.). These files can be defragged only at boot time. You can check it by right-clicking the drive, selecting "Volume info..." and clicking "Fragmented files" tab. The list of all fragmented files will appear there.Apparently UD8 doesn't have a boot time option...yet. May 6, 200818 yr I did see in the press release that boot time was removed from the initial release to make way for a better boot time module to be released end of June (free to registered users). They admit the module that was in the old UD was not up to snuff.Kylehttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/747400.jpg Kyle Main Sim PC: P3D v5.2 & MSFS 2020, i9-10850k @ 5.0 GHz, ASUS Maximus XII Hero, ASUS TUF-RTX3080-12G, Dell U3011 30" IPS monitor, G.Skill 32GB 3200 Trident Z 14-14-14, Samsung 512GB 960 Pro NVMe (OS), Samsung 2TB 970 EVO NVMe (Sim), Win 10 Pro 64, Yoko Yoke, Saitex Combat Rudder Pedals, Honeycomb Bravo Throttle Quadrant
May 6, 200818 yr Yes, you can indeed disable the prompts. But the boot optimize feature in Vista is quite powerful in itself and a major reason to upgrade from XP.The last access date is needed for the program to be able to tell Archive files from Performance files automatically. It's also used by some backup programs etc. It shouldn't reduce disk read performance noticeable - the "stamp" isn't writen right away, it's stored in a cache and written when there isn't a lot of harddrive activity.Having it defrag over night requires you to leave your computer on. If you forget this, you'll miss a defrag run. If Vista's defragmenter misses a defrag run, it will defrag using low priority IO whenever the computer is idle (it also detects other background tasks like indexing and give them priority). It can partially defrag over lunch, then stop as you return to the computer, then once again resume defragging where it left off while you watch your favorite tv show etc.http://blogs.technet.com/filecab/articles/440717.aspx -
October 20, 200817 yr Has anyone heard any news about the boot time module considering it's now October...Have had problem deciding if I should use Diskeeper or UD and still haven't come to a 100% decision, I like Diskeeper since it to me feels a bit more "professional" and I also like it's set it and forget it nature but on the other hand I like UD for it's features that will let you decide where on the disk to put your files like moving everything that has to do with FSX to the fastest tracks of the disk.Last time I installed UD 2008 after running Diskeeper for a while I noticed one thing that I found strange with Diskeeper's behaviour, according to the analize in UD Diskeeper had placed all the files on the partition where I have FSX installed on the inner tracks of the disk...which according to UD is the slowest place to have them...wondering why Diskeeper decided to put all files there...? This was only true for the disk where I have FSX installed which is also my system partition disk. When looking at the other disks in my system the files where all placed on the outer tracks...strange huh? On the other hand...I wonder how big the difference really is between the outer and the inner tracks when you for instance like in my case has a Raid0 set with fast disks...Not an easy one this ;)
October 20, 200817 yr I bought this product earlier in the year. It crashed every time I ran it. I sent an e-mail to their support people and got a receipt but no solution or suggestions. I sent two or three "chasers", but got no further response. I eventually stumbled upon a solution for myself, when new drivers were released for my 3ware SAS card. This is my rather oblique way of answering your first question: no, I haven't heard any news about the boot time module; and based on my experience of their product support, I won't be holding my breath, either. In fairness, I should add that the product - so far as I can tell - does what it claims, although it has an exceptionally naff user interface. October 20, 200817 yr Thanks for your input Tim!I'm sorry to say I have somewhat the same experience as you with UD and the company behind it. Had a problem with one of the older versions of UD a couple of years ago and tried my very best to get any attention from their support people but to no avail...to me that made me feel this was someone who wanted to earn some easy, extra cash but when it came to customer support etc that wasn't quite as interesting as the extra money...Reason I decided to try it again is I never tried it with my current FSX setup, guess I'll give it a couple of weeks to find out how good it is and if I will be able to see any noticeable difference from a FSX performance perspective and if not I will probably go back to Diskeeper again.
