Is the default King Air flight really bad or is it just me?

Featured Replies

Whenever I fly the default King Air 350, it feels like a toy. The pitch is so sensitive it must make F-16s jealous. Is there a better flight model available for it? Or at least a pitch sensitivity adjustment. If not, I guess I'll see if I can put guns on it and put the fear into "other" fighter jets.Ok. maybe I'm going a little overboard here, but other A/C rise and fall realistically when ascending or descending, but the King Air seems to pivot on some magic swivel. It is especially noticeable right after takeoff.Thaellar

I agree with you. The King Air flies like it is a bit of a puppet on a string. To put this right properly would take quite a lot of work, but there is something you can do which will go a little way to alleviating the worst symptoms of pitch excesses. After making a safety copy of the King Air aircraft cfg file, find this section within it:[flight_tuning]Under this section you will find two lines that are relevant:elevator_effectiveness = 1.0pitch_stability = 1.0You could try decreasing the first and increasing the second. It won't be anywhere near a perfect solution as this requires careful airfile editing but the above might go someway to calming down the yo-yoing in pitch.Kind Regards,Rob Young

Thank you Robert. Appreciate the input. I'll give that a try.Thaellar

I used 0.5 and 1.5 and that seems to work OK.Rob, since you're here would you have any plans to update the (freeware) air files for the FS2004 172SP to work in FSX? I have used it in FSX and it "seems" to work OK but I was just wondering if there are any other implications to doing this. Thanks.

I happened to fly this for the first time the other day. Most default planes are done pretty well but to me, the King Air is the exception. I dont like anything about it, the cockpit is mickey mouse, it handles poorly, and it sounds like a weed wacker. Having time in the 'real' one, it's very dissapointing.

Hi Pontiuspilotus (great forum name btw!),I do try to keep my hand in on freeware and the last time was the quite recent Sabre with Jan Visser, but there are only so many hours in a day and it's enough just to keep on top of serving paying customers which is of course a priority. The C172 would need a lot of work to port to FSX because even though it is essentially a flight model update, to do it properly requires changing many params since FSX handles flight in some significantly different ways. You never know though - I might one day roll up my sleeves and sacrifice a nice day out in the sunshine! All the best,Rob Young

Hi Rob,I understand the many priorities you have to juggle and many thanks for your efforts, whether freeware or payware. I do have your Sabre and it is certainly wonderful to be able to enjoy payware quality "freeware" for such an awesome aircraft. And if you are able to update the C172 rest assured the community will appreciate it very much as well. Best wishesPontius

Another thing you may want to try, is to download Alexander Metzger's improved flight model from:http://www.metzgergva.de/default_e.htm

Thanks a lot for that link Bert. Calmed her down a lot. Of course it didn't help the somewhat horrid VC, but thanks for the "definitely-improves-the-flight-model" link.cheers,Thaellar

Happy that worked.I agree, the VC is horribly dated. If you want a nice twin, your best optionsare the Digital Aviation Cheyenne or the RealAir Duke.Mind you, the default Baron is not bad, and if you dress it up with the RealityXP FLTgauge set, the VC is actually really nice..

That does look nice. How difficult is that to install for someone who has never altered a panel before?Thaellar

Yep the default flight characteristics are bad.I use Alexander Metzger's B350 FDE from his site listed...

It all depends on how comfortable you are with a text editor such as Notepad, and how much patience you haveto do fine adjustments. There is a tool called FS Panel Studio which gives you more of WYSIWYG interface.Here is what you need for the Baron VC (try it, you may like it)..[VCockpit01]size_mm=512,512pixel_size=1024,1024 texture=$Beech_Baron_1background_color=0,0,0gauge00=Beech_Baron!Engine Controls Unit,0, 0, 319, 500gauge01=RXPFLN!RMI, 371, 356, 141, 141gauge02=RXPFLT!KI256, 326, 0, 186, 177gauge03=RXPFLT!KI525, 326, 178, 186, 177gauge04=Beech_Baron!Prop Sync Spinner, 338, 356, 31, 30gauge05=Beech_Baron!Autopilot Switch, 341, 389, 28, 27gauge06=Beech_Baron!Flight Director Switch, 341, 419, 28, 28[VCockpit02]size_mm=512,512pixel_size=1024,1024texture=$Beech_Baron_2background_color=0,0,0gauge00=Bendix_King_Radio!Bendix-King Radio Audio, 256, 327, 256, 50gauge01=RXPFLT!Altimeter, -1, 355, 158, 158gauge02=Beech_Baron!Gear Lights, 269, 382, 58, 37gauge03=Beech_Baron!Gear In Transition Light, 285, 423, 26, 23 gauge04=Magnetic_Compass!Magnetic-Compass, 269, 451, 58, 58gauge05=Beech_Baron!DME, 330, 379, 112, 56gauge06=Beech_Baron!Flaps Switch, 328, 437, 114, 75gauge07=Beech_Baron!Ammeter, 444, 388, 68, 124gauge08=RXPFLT!VerticalSpeed, -1, 1, 156, 157gauge09=RXPFLT!TurnCoordinator, 157, 0, 158, 158gauge10=RXPFLT!Airspeed, 316, 0, 153, 153gauge11=Beech_Baron!Left Manifold Pressure, 0, 159, 82, 82gauge12=Beech_Baron!Right Manifold Pressure, 0, 242, 82, 82gauge13=Beech_Baron!Left RPM Indicator, 83, 159, 82, 82gauge14=Beech_Baron!Right RPM Indicator, 83, 242, 82, 82gauge15=Beech_Baron!Left Fuel Flow Indicator, 166, 159, 82, 82gauge16=Beech_Baron!Right Fuel Flow Indicator, 166, 242, 82, 82gauge17=Beech_Baron!Left Engine Temperature Indicator, 249, 159, 82, 82gauge18=Beech_Baron!Right Engine Temperature Indicator, 249, 242, 82, 82gauge19=Beech_Baron!Left Oil Condition Indicator, 332, 159, 82, 82gauge20=Beech_Baron!Right Oil Condition Indicator, 332, 242, 82, 82gauge21=Beech_Baron!Left Fuel Quantity, 417, 158, 83, 83gauge22=Beech_Baron!Right Fuel Quantity, 417, 242, 83, 83gauge23=Beech_Baron!Instrument Air, 161, 407, 105, 105[VCockpit03]file=Beech_Baron_Panel_Decals.bmpsize_mm=512,512pixel_size=1024,1024texture=$Beech_Baron_3background_color=0,0,0gauge00=Bendix_King_Radio!Bendix-King Radio Nav-Comm 1, 0, 0, 258, 95gauge01=Bendix_King_Radio!Bendix-King Radio Nav-Comm 2, 0, 96, 258, 95gauge02=Bendix_King_Radio!Bendix-King Radio DME, 0, 259, 258, 66gauge03=Bendix_King_Radio!Bendix-King Radio ADF, 0, 192, 258, 66gauge04=Bendix_King_Radio!Bendix-King Radio Xpndr, 0, 326, 258, 78gauge05=Bendix_King_Radio!Bendix-King Radio AP, 0, 405, 258, 77gauge06=n_number_plaque!n_number_plaque, 170, 486, 66, 25 gauge07=Beech_Baron!Annunciator Gear Up, 362, 477, 48, 16gauge08=Beech_Baron!Annunciator Left Alternator, 412, 494, 48, 16gauge09=Beech_Baron!Annunciator Right Alternator, 412, 477, 48, 16gauge10=Beech_Baron!Annunciator Starter, 462, 477, 46, 16gauge11=Beech_Baron!Annunciator Aft Door, 362, 494, 48, 16gauge12=Beech_Baron!Clock, 280, 475, 69, 34gauge13=Cessna!Nav_GPS_Annunciator, 236, 487, 23, 23

It's been a long time..........So I just took it for a spin. Guess what? I kinda liked it! I didn't think it was touchy at all! Perhaps I'm very use to sensitive controls these days. If the real Baron feels more like a lumbering truck than this, then perhaps I wouldn't enjoy one. :( But regardless, I felt no sense of over control.L.Adamson

The thread morphed into the Baron. I love the Baron. Nice flight model. No, the issue is with the King Air 350. Try that one.And then go here to fix it: http://www.metzgergva.de/default_e.htm cheers,Thaellar
