ForceWare 186.18 WHQL on Win7 RC1

Featured Replies

Hi AllAgain a new test with new Nvidia Driver 186.18 WHQL.And the stutters with my GTX280 are back.... No more to say!Perhaps others are more lucky than me with this driver.

Same result with 8800 Ultra. All aspects suffered serious degradation, as with all 185's and 186's. Gratefully reverted to 182.50's.GeoffreyQ6600, Asus Striker Extreme, 2 GB DDR2 800, XP SP3, FSX Acceleration

Installed the 186.18 drivers today and also ugraded nHancer to 2.5.1. No problems. Pretty much the same as the previous drivers in FSX. No problem with stutters.I get stutters with high autogen settings when flying in mountain areas with a lot of forests, but this isn't caused by the drivers. It's caused by too high display settings.

I agree with Ulf. No problems here and in fact received a small performance boost with the 3D Mark Vantage benchmark. One of the display driver settings I have found that reduces stuttering drastically is the Texture filering - Negative LOD bias. The default is Allow but changing it to Clamp will help reduce stutters. As Ulf stated, you need to lower some scenery settings too.Best regards,Jim Young

Why should it be the settings if I only change the driver? Whit 182.50 everything is smooth and with all newer ones there are more to extreme stutters.Perhaps with a GTX285 the new drivers will run FSX better than my GTX280.

For whatever reason, it seems that sometimes you need to re-apply nHancer settings after changing driver versions. Having said that, personally I'm not sure that 186 adds anything to 185 and this is one of the areas where "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" is a good rule to apply.Tim

How did you remove the old driver?

Agree with Tim...I have found with vid drivers + FS especially..."If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is a good way to go.Go with what works for your setup.

I always remove old video drivers with the following steps:1. Uninstall the drivers via Add/Remove Programs2. Reboot3. Use Driver Cleaner from Guru3d4. Reboot5. Install the new Driver 6. Reboot7. Check nHancer Settings8. Do a Testflight

That is a good routine; I just wanted to make sure you did it the right way, to rule out driver registry / uninstall issues. With that ruled out...the only conclusion I can logically draw is that the 186's you are using have optimizations that hurt your card in FSX. I have just about come to the same conclusion with the 185.85 driver, too. I would go back to what worked for you...that's what I am going to do as well.

I always go back to 182.50 until there "hopefully" will be a better driver for my combination of hard- and software.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've been having some flaky issues with dual-monitor and FSX, so I tried "upgrading" drivers from 182.52 to 186.18 today (2GB eVGA GTX 285 running on Vista 64).It stuttered worse than Hank Paulson testifying to Congress. I also noted that dxdiag was reporting only 745MB of total available video memory, where it reports something like 4080 MB with the 182.52 driver installed.I reverted back to 182.52 and I'm back to smooth ops (but on one monitor in FSX for now).RegardsBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO

I found the same thing to be true on my setup. The 185's were TERRIBLE. I went back to 180.something and my sim is once again smooth and fast. Wouldn't be the first time that an older driver worked better than a newer driver on my 8800GTX card. Same was true in the past with my 7800GT.

is it possible that you have your settings so high that you've actually ran out of video memory with the new drivers, and hence the stutters? That's what happened to me. :)

No, that's not possible with me. :(

Mace: so you have stutters despite the ram usage is fine? I would guess the cards defective then... after all they did have heat issues prior to the 512 release. :(
