I can't answer your question but am interested in the same answer. Clock speed for clock speed, what kind of performance boost (in FPS) do you get going from a Core2 to an i7?RH

well i received my system and have installed FSX, i can definately see improved boot up times and FSX doesnt take as long to load, however i am still getting pretty much the same frame rates as i was in my old E6600 system, perhaps there are tweaks i need to do for this system to improve performance?i have updated my Geforce 285 graphic drivers and have seen some improvement, but i still seem to not be satisfied with the performance.by the way i am using the PMDG 747 for testing.

FSX uses mostly CPU and RAM power (I think, I'm definitely no expert) I heard a Dual core at 4.0 ghz can perform better in FSX than an I7 at 2.66 because it all depends on CPU cycles (whatever the crap they are!) . Try overclocking that I7 and you should see an performance increase.James Lunsford

You're leaving a third of your available memory bandwidth on the table by running only two 2GB DIMMs. All X58-based mobos (that's ALL motherboards for the i7 at present) are designed for triple-channel memory, which means you have to have 3 DIMMs. Add that limitation to your fairly slow 1333 MHz @ CAS 9 memory, and you're way behind the power curve on memory bandwidth. Adding another 2GB DIMM will help substantially, even with CAS 9 DRAM.As mentioned above, CPU speed is very important. The i7 pipelines instructions better, making it faster than a dual-core at the same clock speed...but an i7 at 2.66GHz is not going to beat a dual core Conroe or Penryn running at 4 GHz. To realize the potential of your i7 920 you need to push it up a good ways, at least into mid 3GHz territory.RegardsBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO

A Bob mentioned the memory is no good for this you need 2x3GB of the lowest latency DDR3 1600 for i7 you can afford7-7-7 maximum timing.. 6-6-6 would be betterThe 650watt PSU.. That WONT cut it and assuming it is a solid 650 it will run very warm or even hotA GTX 285 on a i7 assuming some clocking and you are about 100watts too lowyou need a GOOD 750watt PSU

do you think i can overclock this sucker as is, i cant afford to go out and buy new hardware for it just yet, maybe in a years time i can do what you said (update ram and Power)regards

I posted a typo above... its 3x2GB, not 2x3GB (sorry)If the BIOS allows access then you can clockHowever you want performance with big iron in FSX and in order to get that you need to make sure the system is able to make use of that processor. Running 4GB of high latency memory wont cut it and in order to clock properly it must also be DDR3 1600Decent clocking also requires a 3rd party heatsink. The Intel heatsink will fall on its face very fast. When you consider you have a proc that can easily and safely do 4GHz and one does not purchase the right memory or heatsink to run it.. all you are doing is throwing money at a limited resultSo you are cutting your i7 proc down right out of the gateAnd that PSU is going to be running hotter that Hades to keep up with that hardware and any clock

Here's what I would do if I had that config and was on a tight budget.First, get another stick of the same RAM. You really need to have three DIMMs in the computer, even if the RAM is slow. If you're running a 32-bit OS, it's more murky, as the upper 2GB won't be seen by the OS, but the 4GB it can see will work in triple-channel mode that way. A 32 bit OS on an i7 is an awkward fit anyway.Given that you only have 1 HDD in there, I think you should be able to safely overclock the CPU to whatever it'll give you at stock voltage (1.25v)--probably around 3.2-3.5 GHz. No reason to go for much higher as long as you're using that slow RAM anyway. That'll keep the CPU power consumption down to ~200W. The GPU will draw 180W assuming it's not overclocked and running at the stock 648MHz speed. The X58 mobos draw less power than their predecessors because the memory controller on the northbridge was moved to the CPU...figure about 125W for the mobo chipset and RAM. That puts you above 500W already, and now add in HDD, fans etc, and you're getting pretty close to rated power (closer than I like to get in my own builds). All this assumes you are not running in a room at 30+ deg C, and that you have good case cooling. Also, forget overclocking with the intel stock HSF, you have to have a decent aftermarket fan to keep the CPU cool, although at a mild OC with the CPU at 1.25v it doesn't take anything cosmic. You're going to need to keep an eye on the power supply temp...it should be warm (but not hot) to the touch, and the first sign of hot electrical odor is cause for an immediate shutdown to back off on things.RegardsBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO

well this is the ram you all are talking about,http://www.umart.com.au/newindex2.phtml?bid=5damn expensive!i think i will wait a while before i go upgrading anything as i have just spent $1600 on this system (Australian dollars)but thanks all for input, i will definately try and overclock it a little,.regards

That does look rather bad. Here are a couple of suggestions for you: Have you enabled anisotropic filtering in FSX? (Options menu > Display). In the Nvidia control panel or (preferably) nHancer, making sure you make the same selections both for the "Global" and for the "FSX" profile pages:- have you turned up the level of anisotropic filtering? Try the 16x setting . - are you sure you have not set up the Nvidia control panel (or nHancer) to use mipmaps? - are you using "High quality" texture filtering? - have you set the level of detail ("LOD") control to "Clamp"?Those are the most likely suspects that I can think of.Good luck.Tim

I'll tell you right now your problem is that you need to overclock. The i7 920 is a great overclocking chip and I have mine overclocked to 3.8 on air and I'm not even pushing the boundaries of heat. You also need to get your ram figured out. Like the other said it's designed for triple and I am running mine at 1600 8 8 8 24Once you get your system up to par follow the guide here http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=249830I have almost the same system as you and get frames of 40 to 50 using pmdg.

hi hardwateryes i know i should overclock the sucker, but ive spent all my money (budgeted) for my new system, so unfortunately i wont be spending a dime on this system for another 6-12 months.
