A first FU3 flight under Windows 7 RC

Featured Replies

Yes we can still use FU3 when Windows 7 will be here.It was just a flight without real installation - from a DVD backup but it works :( Andre

Windows 7 seems to be more like XP than Vista in many respects. In any event, it doesn't go in a totally new direction and XP/Vista drivers should be fine. Windows 7 allows the user to select his / her preferred level of annoying messages and warnings :(

I had the same experience , anyway I can't get the sim to display more than 256 colors and the sky is rendered with bands of light blue, I tried everything: reinstalling directx, forcing catalyst control center in 32 bit color depth mode, nothing seems to work. ( the graphics card is a cheap radeon hd 3600 series and the trial pc is an amd64 3500+)The funny thing is i tried the same back-up installation of fu3 on mycompaq netbook with intel gma chipset and it works great... any suggestions?

Hi Towerman,It's the 3D graphic driver that do not work, look at the fu3 settings if the 3D mode is on.I have a poor 3D color too with my test using a NVidia FS5200 - the card is not recognized by the system and I can't even use NHancer.Andre

I'm a bit surprised that Windows 7 has driver problems since I would have expected it to to be set up to recognize anything Vista / XP. Still, it's hardly unusual that a next OS will require new drivers. What it boils down to is that the video card will be compromised until Windows 7 drivers become available. I'm quite sure the same goes for nHancer :(

wow. I am amazed that my old favourite flight simulator still works on windows 7. It's great to see the same names still hanging in as well :) Just saw avsim on bbc news so thought I'd stop by, I'm quite far out of the flight simming world now but maybe it'll grab me again some day.Ben (previously known as biopak)

What does it take to get FU2/3 running under Win7? I've messed around with Fly!II and wasn't successful. Would love to get my all time favorite sim running again. Takes me back to the old Pierglass Aviation Days......ahhh....now THAT was flight simming....Dondo

I have moved on to Flight Simulator X, but Flight Unlimited 3 will always have a special place in my heart.

Chris, I'm spreading myself thin (as I always did) since I cherish any good flight simulator. FS9 is still going strong and X-Plane has kept me busy lately. I didn't buy FSX for several reasons, mainly because FS9 + "tons" of addons looks pretty good and secondly because I was told that no current PC could really run FSX unless the sliders were to the left. However, as I've stated numerous times before, FU III stays. To me this goes in cycles -- I spend most of my flightsimming time with FS for some months, then X-Plane and after a while FU III. When the leaves turn yellow I'll focus more on FU III again. Actually, summer is downtime for most simmers since outdoor activities tend to take most of our leisure time :(It's your choice for sure, but you don't really have to "move on" in the sense of choosing to use another sim exclusively...

My dream has always been to be able to fly around a highly detailed rendition of the British Isles, and FSX has given me the opportunity to do just that. The VFR Generation X Version 2 photographic scenery of England and Wales (Horizon Simulations) is superb (1.2m per pixel texture resolution, and 5 metre resolution terrain mesh), and the first two volumes of UK2000s VFR Airfields series provides me with over 150 detailed airfields and airports to visit. Horizon will shortly be releasing the first VFR Scotland product (the Western Isles), and that will be followed by four more (covering all of Scotland, plus the Orkneys and Shetland Isles). In addition, Earth Simulations are developing extremely detailed versions of the Channel Isles (I already have Alderney, and it's amazing), the Isle of Man, and the Scilly Isles.Volume 3 of VFR Airfields (Northern England) should be released in Autumn 2010, and I suspect that there will be a Volume 4 (Scotland). When all of these have been completed (and we are probably looking at Christmas 2011), my dream should be a reality :( In short, I don't need Flight Unlimited 3 these days. The default Beechcraft Baron in FSX is a nice plane to fly (far better than the one in old versions of MSFS), and I have just purchased a really nice BAe Jetstream 41 twin turboprop from PMDG (Precision Manuals Design Group). I have always wanted a super accurate version of that plane, so I was delighted when I heard that PMDG were developing it. The flight model is very good (it is very stable at low speeds), so I can hand fly it using my own unique style :( I have just about worked out the power levels (or more accurately, the torque levels) required for a steady climb out after take off, cruise, and then final approach).Another point worth noting is that the FU3 panels don't display correctly on my Windows Vista64 PC. Large chunks are missing, which is obviously unacceptable.

Totally agree. My shelf is full with everything flightsim from the 90s up to a sealed copy of FSX Deluxe. Today, I'll be picking up my new computer parts and hope to be installing FU3, FS9, and FSX the latest on Friday. Maybe I even can be bothered to install Fly! I don't bother with X-Plane until they come up with believable ATC. Good times ahead, if everything works.

Regarding this sim, if you end up with display anomalies on your new computer there's an easy cure. Read all about it in the thread "I found it".Windows Vista and Windows 7 may present some challenges if you install the sim directly from its original installation disks. The problem is that the heightened security may cause the OS to refuse to install anything that's not certified unless each and every step is run in administrator mode. Most of us old timers have copied FU3 over from previous installations. Last time I installed FU3 from disks was 5-6 years ago, under Windows 2000. Since FU3 requires no registry entries whatsoever you can simply copy the entire application / burn it to a data DVD and run it. Jon Point got around the Vista installation problems by copying each installation disk to a drive, select all files and instruct Vista to accept and run them all. Then he ran the installation from the approved copy on his drive rather than from the physical disk. Another way may be to disable User Account Control. In any event, there's nothing that prevents you from running old applications once they're installed.

Yes it will but you must run it in compatibility mode and may be the install procedure will not work but a full copy of the installed game will go.good luckAndre
