Should I upgrade...

Featured Replies

I've been saving a sort of fund to build a new computer. I've been eying the Gigabyte GAX58 Extreme and the I7 975. The question is not so much should I upgrade, but rather should I wait for the next big thing. I'm planning on actually building the computer in the next 4 months. To the mods: As the other hardware threads are more troubleshooting related, I figured this was an OK place to post :(

If you got the cash to burn. Then I would definitely go for the i7 series as of flight Sims hobby. You can go for the i7 975 if you don't know much about over clocking.Nothing less you can go for i7 920 if you know how to over clock and can easily bump to 4ghz on air.Best coolers-> TRUE 120 1366 (Lapped surface if you want as well as the cpu) or the Noctua SE1366 excellent performance and never goes beyond 20 db/a @ 1300 RPM.Good luck on your build! Any question ask me.

975 will be the flagship quad core part at least until the six-core Gulftown chips launch in the 2nd Quarter of 2010. This according to Intel's recently leaked roadmap. So if you buy now, you'll buy knowing you're getting the fastest chip available for the next 8-9 months at least.

That being said, I'll want to have the luxury of upgrading the processor with out buying a new board. I guess I'll bite and order the 975 today, anyway. As for overclocking, I'll definitely be oc'ing this thing mildly.

It is said that current X58 boards will be able to handle the 6-core CPUs when they are released but we've heard that song and dance before...

If it were me, it would be the Asus P6T v2, i7 920, clocked to 4.0GHz+ with the Thermalright 1366 coolerhttp://www.crazypc.com/products/PX50983.htmlplus a GTX 285, 6GB ram, solid psu, velociraptor HDD etcand thanks for that intel roadmap, pretty cool!

Thanks guys. Yeah, I'm going to go with the 920, but I'm sticking with my originally mentioned board.BTW, I'm ordering from Newegg. I'm really wanting the D0 stepping. Anywhere I can guarantee this to get this?

I

ASUS Rampage II Extreme (BIOS 1406)Intel Core i7-975 Extreme Edition w/Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme 1366 RTMushkin Redline Ascent 6GB (3 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) (6-6-5-18)EVGA GTX 285 FTW Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1tyWD VelociRaptor 150GB

If you must have a D0 step i7 your best bet is actually MicroCenter. If you have a store nearby at which you can stop in, you'll find a price of only $199 and a salesman that will be more than happy to either1) pick out a D0 step CPU for you2) be glad to hand you the box and let you inspect for yourself

In case you don't have one near you Antares Digital is where I've seen people getting the D0 revisionshttp://www.antaresdigital.com/customer/pro...at=0&page=1

Nice, thanks guys. And yes, I "must" go the D0 stepping route :( I'm going to speed this baby up. I also can't see ANY reason for paying $1000 for the 975 when the 920 is almost identical (besides bragging about how Intel jipped ya'). Can anyone enlighten me and share how the $800 difference is justified? I doubt it. Save for those that don't want to/can't overclock.

When you buy an Extreme Edition processor you're buying the flagship unit which is the cream of the crop. Guaranteed to run at the highest speeds of any chips Intel sells, right out of the box. Which usually means better overclocking results as well. The unlocked multiplier can only help one achieve their overclocking goal as well.

I know, but is the $800 justified? That was my question! :(
