Engine Startup Procedures - Text

Featured Replies

Lotta guys are having trouble starting up it seems like, so I thought I'd try and help out to make things a little clearer between the "BEFORE START" and "AFTER START" checklist - it's kind of a no-man's land. What I've got could be more confusing than what's in the manual, who knows, but I thought I'd give it a try. This will print out in two pages. Easier to have at your side to refer to. If I missed anything, have something wrong, out of flow, or have a typo, let me know. Hope this helps.J41 Engine Start Cheat SheetJust a reminder, before you go anywhere after the engines are started, put the throttles into BETA to get the props off the start locks. That's a very easy step to miss. This is outlined in the "TAXI CHECK" checklist.

Why cannot I start the left engine first if I only use the battery? Volts are above 25, the engine starts but as soon as the engine selector knob disengage the engine will also shut down. Fuel pumps are on and avionics off.FRED

Fred,I just tried starting the left engine on battery only multiple times and didn't have any issues. Can you start the right engine on battery without a problem?

Yip, no problem there. Power levers is in the same position as the left. Very weird.FRED

Just to make sure, you can start the left engine with the GPU on, it's just when you try to start on battery that it won't start?Have you tried resetting failures? EDIT: And make sure you go through each tab that's displayed and use the reset failures button. Systems, instruments, engines, and the rest.

A question about the engine start procedure: Why is it necessary to slide the power levers back till REV light comes on, then forward till REV goes out and then a extra 1/4" forward, before engine start? When i skip this part, the engines start just fine.Gerrit

Manual says that's the proper position for the power levers on startup.

Fred,I fought this problem for most of the day, and it turned out to be a calibration issue on my CH throttle quadrant. It took a couple of recalibrations before my aging TQ finally got the hint, and now, I'm not having any problems. If you're running a throttle quadrant, you might want to check it.

I do!! I will recalibrate it tonight and have a go. As mine is also aging a bit I am thinking of moving the power lever control to my Saitek Pro throttle quadrant. Making reverse work with it is a PITA though but I think I have a solution for that. The pressed F2 might work and I can live with the sudden change from full reverse to nothing. FRED

Thanks man, this should come in hand indeed. :(
