September 14, 200916 yr Guys l have now found that the start locks werent in the right position when l started the engines so many thanks for the help on this. Now when l throttle back to disable the start locks b 4 l taxi.. it doenst say start locks removed? what am l doing wrong? Many Thanks guysPaul
September 14, 200916 yr Did you slowly pull each throttle lever into full BETA (reverse). I normally pull them individually, but I think some people pull both levers at the same time and still get the locks removed. You have to ensure you pull them as far back as they can go. That's my only advice. :( Erik L.
September 14, 200916 yr Paul,It's a tricky balance to get the props off the start latches, but once you get the hang of it, it's not too bad.The correct technique is to do it one at a time. You don't want to pull the levers all the way back as you're likely to brew up an engine going into reverse. What I do is to grab the power lever with the mouse cursor and pull the it back until the part of it that goes down into the track is at least half the lever's width into the hash-marks on the side of the power lever tracks. Be careful to do this slowly, and to make sure that you don't let the EGT rise too high. If you don't have a throttle quadrant, then hit F1 to get the lever to pop back to idle...if you do, then move the physical TQ lever a bit forward then back to idle, just to resync the virtual lever with the physical one. When you do the second engine, you should get the FO call about start locks being removed...if you don't, go back and try the first engine again, and keep alternating, moving a little bit further into the hash-marked range each time until you get the "Start locks removed" call. September 14, 200916 yr Thanks for this little tutorial about the Start Locks, Kurt. I also didn't hear the call when i did the engine 1 first, so i became customized in doing them both at the same time to get the call. Now i understand how it's done.Regards, Gerrit Gerrit
September 15, 200916 yr Author Nah, didnt work.. l`ve started the engines with no problems.. l take 1 engine at a time in reverse to release the lock but l dont get lock released.was there something l missed? l noticed that if l take off my EGT goes balistic. Many Thanks guysPaul
September 15, 200916 yr What I normally do is unfeather the props before engine startup and visually check the props are in the correct angle and then the rest of the startup sequence.Otherwise the engine will rev up and you'll keep waiting like forever and won't hear the correct propsound. September 15, 200916 yr Author Yes l know condition levers flight.. thats fine. But l have noticed when l hit both unfeather after alittle while they got back to normal position. l might try one at a time.Lets see if it worksThanks guysRegardsPaul
September 15, 200916 yr Author Whats a left and right beta? l noticed this on the screen in green.. would it have something to do with my problem..also could someone give me a small run down on what they do to start the engines? l have everything ok, l can start but its thedarn starter locks..Thx guysPaul

As for the method of engine starting, please go through the tutorial again, or watch the video made by Andrew (ACA861) pinned at the top of this forum: J41 Engine Start Guide, A step-by-step video guideAs for removing start locks after engine start, pull each throttle lever back slowly to reverse, and then back to idle. September 15, 200916 yr Author Nah, l was told after not been able to start the engines was to make sure the un feather was selected near the throttles.l did, the props went into a slimmer direction.. l was then able to start the engines. But after that l moved the throttles back, l didnt l hear stop brakes released or something like that.thats why l asked what was the beta?... the video didnt really show that much from what l was doing.l think the problem might be caused from a cold and dark state that l saved. but l guess it shouldnt be..Many ThxPaul
September 15, 200916 yr Paul,It sounds like you're not pulling the power levers far enough back.Another technique that has worked for me is to use the F2 key. Press the F2 key once every two seconds, listening for the "Start locks removed" call. Position your view so you can see the engine instruments and the power levers, so you can see what the power lever position is when you get the start locks call. Then, the next time, you'll know where to pull the individual levers with the mouse.A word of caution: SET THE PARKING BRAKE BEFORE YOU TRY THIS.
