ATC GO ROUND

Featured Replies

I use the default ATC for now, but I'm getting fed up ,when after an IFR flight, say into KBOS but could be anywhere, I'm instructed to "go round" when about 500ft to t.d. Now I know from real life experience a Cessna 180 would get a go round if a commercial was up behind it, in the sim I'm getting the reverse, a 767-300 giving way to a 180. I've taken to turning the comm off and just landing but that's not an answer, any ideas would be appreciated. Cheers.

I haven't had to go-around for traffic in a while, even though I run it with a full load of realistic AI traffic using only the MS ATC. Here are the keys to a better experience.1. Realistic traffic. You won't find many Cessnas flying into KBOS. Get rid of your default traffic file. Use only realistic AI airline plans, MAIW military traffic, and GA traffic plans that keep the GA at mostly GA airports.2. Be more situationally aware. Listen in to who else is getting vectored for your same airport. Build a picture in your mind of what is going on. Pay some attention to your TCAS if you have it. Slow down earlier if you think you are going to get stuck behind slower traffic like turboprops. Jet AI traffic slow to about 210kts prior to joining final. Stay fast if you think you may have to beat another AI plane to the runway.3. Set landing and takeoff runways at your airports with AFCAD. Busy airports run more smoothly in MSFS if they have multiple runways and you dedicate some for takeoff only and some for landing only. Even better if an airport has multiple parallel runways where you can have more than one operating as an arrival runway simultaneously or if you've "STARed" them into multiple active crossing runways. When ATC assigns you a runway, make sure you ask for one which you think would be less busy. For example, for KIAH, I have 8L/26R and 9/27 for landing only while I leave 8R/26L as the takeoff runway. Houston sits at the bottom of the United States and most traffic inbound to it comes from the north, so 8L/26R is the busier of the two, given the manner in which MSFS ATC assigns runways. So ask for 9/27 and you won't have to compete with as many AI planes. KATL is even better, as 8L/26R and 10/28 suck up all the arrivals, leaving 9R/27L in the middle almost always completely free for your landing use.4. Plan an arrival time that is not so busy. There are various AI managing programs out there that you can use to see how busy an airport is at any time. Give yourself an "ATC" delay so that your arrival time is at a time where you won't have to compete with as many AI planes for the runway. That, in essence, is how real life ATC ground delay programs work as well.

Also consider using a program such as AI Smooth or AI Seperation. They can help smooth out heavy AI traffic so you will get less go arounds. Both programs should be found in the library here.

Thank you for your helpful replies. Kevin, have experimented on "quieter " landing times and this does seem to work, I will also experiment on your other suggestions. The Cessna 180 was just an example, having been at KBOS in 2006, I wouldn't want to land there in a small plane. David, I have an old version of AI Separation, I believe there is a newer version but their site is down "for upgrading". Have now installed AI Smooth which I'm sure will help.Grant

Generally speaking, ATC gives clearance to land as an aircraft reaches a given distance from the airport and the first to be given such clearance will be allowed to land with other traffic having to go around. This works better than it did in FS2002 where a slow aircraft (annoying if it is you!) on approach might be overtaken by something larger and the first to reach the runway was the one to land. The main issue that arises with FS2004's system is with VFR aircraft approaching the airport from the wrong end flying in pattern. It seems that at some point in the circuit they come close enough to the airport to be given clearance to land, even though they have a few minutes flight before they even get to line up for approach. This can then cause large amounts IFR traffic to be sent around until the little VFR aircraft arrives.A quick and dirty workaround for this is to listen out to ATC and if you hear such an aircraft being given permission to land, turn off GA traffic and immediately on again - this will restart the GA traffic and none will be at the stage of landing or in pattern.Hoping this helps.John

My solution, buy FSUIPC, and assign the Traffic Zapper feature to the spacebar. When ever I have an AI problem in front of me, I press the spacebar, and the AI is zapped (removed from the game). Works great. I no longer use AI Smooth or AI Seperation.Good luck, and happy zapping.. RJ

Sadly, that solution will only eliminate aircraft directly ahead. It will not remove AI aircraft behind the user aircraft, as described by the original poster.John

Well, guess I misread what the OP was asking. Reading his post, is sounds like he's in the 767, and just landing with the 180 in front. Why would you care if you're in the 180, with the 767 on your tail, and the 767 is being told to go around? :( And yes, zapper is only good for AI in front.RJ

My method may not be "kosher" but I have the Traffic Density set in FSUIPC to my T key - It will toggle between 0% and 65% as that is the % that I run with.On approach I turn off AI traffic with one T press, land and then hit T again to turn it back on.Perhaps "crude" but it works for me. :(

LOL Opa.... ATC isn't "kosker", and I like your idea.. I'll give that a try.Learn something everyday..RJ
