Global Mesh - Scenery order?

Featured Replies

Hi,I'm in the (tedious) process reinstalling FS2004 on Windows 7 X64 :( I have global Mesh scenery and I think I have somewhere read that global mesh should have the lowest priority, unlike 'normal' scenery add-ons.Is this correct, should my global mesh be the first entry? (thus even lower then Default Terrain and Default Scenery entries)Or should it be just above all the standard FS2004 entries and just below the start of my add-on sceneries? Please advice,Egbert

Hi,Mesh should not even show up one the library list. FS uses the highest resolution mesh it finds without any user input.

This is interesting.I have FS Global SE and it's about half way down in the scenery listing ?Jim, are you saying it should not be showing? I thought it had to as it is a kind of scenery in itself.

Steve.

As a further example, FSGenisis (from DVD) by default installs to Scenery/World/Scenery, that includes 10m, 19m, 38m, 76m, 153m, 306m, all in the same location. No user configuring necessary. As already stated above FS selects the highest resolution available for a given area, regardless of the mesh files location in MSFS.regards,Mel

Hey Mel...you did mean to finish your sentence, didn't you? You meant to say that it doesn't matter where the mesh appears in the MSFS Scenery.cfg file, right? That way there is no confusion because this is an exacting process where one little parameter can cause a crash to disk or having an entire global terrain mesh go missing :)Mark

Hi,I was also referring to FS Global wich uses in it's own propietary scenery folders, hence my question. But what I understand from the replies, is that the scenery order in the scenery.cfg doesn't matter.FS always takes the highest resolution, right?

Hey Egbert, that is the rumor. So I suppose that if you're not getting CTDs, then placing a global mesh anywhere in the Scenery.cfg file can do...but...I think the idea is to do a little testing. Make FSGlobal first in the Scenery.cfg file and take a flight in a familiar terrain. Then, make it last in the Scenery.cfg file and take another flight in the same familiar terrain and see if there's any difference. Maybe test what the sim looks like when FSGlobal is buried in the middle of the Scenery.cfg file too. That way you can decide what looks best in your sim.Over the years, I've heard that global mesh is supposed to go here and it's supposed to go there. If I listened to everyone on this subject, it would be in every conceivable place in the Scenery.cfg file so maybe it is true, it can be anywhere in the file and have any priority :)Mark

One more thing Egbert. I would always make sure all of the Microsoft default objects have a larger priority number/layer then FSGlobal. I think that the default objects end at the "Propeller Objects". So I'd start placing the FSGlobal scenery anywhere after area 37/layer 37! No Mark, I did mean exactly what I said. No matter in which MS scenery folder the mesh file is stored, it will be loaded when you load a flight. The higher the mesh resolution the higher the display priority. High resolution overrides any lower resolution regardless of mesh files location in FS. As a example; If I have a mesh file in the Scenery/World/Scenery that is LOD76m and there is also a mesh file in a add on scenery file for the same geographical area that is LOD38m, then the add on LOD38m is what will be used. If I have a mesh file in the Scenery/World/Scenery that is LOD38m and there is also a mesh file in a add on scenery file for the same geographical area that is LOD76m, then the Scenery/World/Scenery LOD38m is what will be used. This is regardless of Scenery.cfg layer priority.I hope this clarifies what I was trying to say,Regards, MelP.S. With the Scenery/World/Scenery setup there is no scenery.cfg entry, not necessary. Add on scenery with its own mesh would of course need a entry but the above still applies.

What I have read from people the likes of Holger Sandmann and Steve Greenwood, whose history with mesh installation issues goes way back, is that global mesh addons should be at the top of the scenery library. Here's why. FS will use the highest resolution available for any given area. The only time priority is an issue is when 2 different files exist and are active that have the same resolution for a given area. In this case the mesh with the lowest priority is used. Why should we care? Not all mesh are the same. Developers of global mesh products deal with large areas where developers of smaller scenery addons do not. This allows them to fine tune the mesh to their addon. And truthfully we are talking about just a very few addons that include mesh, most don't.You may ask, "what will I see in the sim if I use the global product as opposed to a local one?" It's possible you may not ever notice anything, or you may see mesh anomalies around things like bridges , airport edges, heli pads, etc. And they may not be noticeable or if they are, objectionable. My opinion is, if the developer spends the time to custom fit his mesh to his product, why not set the sim up to optimize his efforts. If you don't agree with me, or think I am full of whoey(sp), then use the search function for posts from Holger and/or Steve about this subject. There are a lot of them to read. That much I know to be fact.Best of simming to you all,Joe

Mel, that makes a bit more sense now. I think what confused me is that the op is using FSGlobal and not FSGenesis and is trying to understand where it's scenery listing should be in the scenery.cfg file. Since FSGlobal installs itself into it's own folder of choice, it's got to have a listing in the scenery.cfg file by default. When I installed my copy of FSGlobal, it defaulted to a root folder of E:\FSGlobal. So it appears as if there are 2 issues here, one is that you need a listing in the scenery.cfg file for FSGlobal's default install and two, that the listing can be just about anywhere in the scenery.cfg file. Hope that makes sense :)Mark

Never have so many, augured for so long about so little as to WHERE DO MESH FILES GO !! I've been reading about this subject for over 10 years and it has as many answers now as it did then. jerrycwo4

Just to keep pounding on that dead horse, any addons (or default for that matter) location in the scenery.cfg is completely irrelevant. :( It's position in the Scenery Library, as seen in the sim, is what matters. (Not all of us keep our scenery.cfg nice and orderly. FS doesn't care if we do or not. I, having some AR tendencies, keep mine clean with Mr. Greenwood's utility.) :( BTW, I installed my FSGenesis in it's own folder with an entry in the .cfg for 2 reasons. 1) makes troubleshooting mesh issues much easier, I can turn it on and off at will.2) some of my older addons that I like to visit look bad with anything other than default mesh. So I can turn it on and off at will.

All due respect Jerry, I don't think we are arguing, just having a lively debate. :( If I was arguing I would not have smilies all over this post B)

Not really. Pre-FSX, and excluding FS9s priority handling, FS has handled mesh pretty much the same for several versions.Granted, no 2 computers or FS setups are the same, and there are as many opinions as there are users. And a lot of those differ.I am just thankful that we have the resources and opportunity to get together virtually and share them. B) regards,JoePS. just learned this board has a smiley/post limit.

BTW, I installed my FSGenesis in it's own folder with an entry in the .cfg for 2 reasons. N60JBravo,Your correct, "aurguing" was probably not the best word to use and MOST of the time I do NOT make silly comments that do not help fix a problem. This time, I guess that I just couldn't help my self. :( Would you please tell me how you put the FS Geneses mesh into its own file(s) and where you placed in in the Scenery Library. Mine is in its original, default location and NOT in the scenery Library. I would like to turn it "off and on" at will. I have just installed Misty and Tongass Fjords and Vancouver Plus 1 that has its own mesh and I'd like to find out which mesh FS2004 uses in these locations. Thanks jerrycwo4

Jerry,When you install FSgenesis you are given the option of where you want to install it to, as you are with most all software.During the install process one of the dialog boxes shows you the path to where it wants to install. Next to the path is often a button with a couple dots on it. If you click on that you are given the option to direct the installer anywhere you want.Prior to running the installer I set up a temporary folder on my desktop and direct the installer to it.After the installer does it's thing I copy the files to their final destination.I can then run the uninstaller and it will remove the files from the temporary folder, but not the final destination, and remove registry entries.Note: some addons require registry entries to work, FSGenesis does not.All of my mesh addons (excluding local mesh that comes as part of a scenery package i.e.:Misty et.al.) are located at the top of the Scenery Library. The reasons why I do this are covered in my previous posts in this topic.regards,Joe
