AA Question/Problem?

Featured Replies

So, I just discovered something that has me a little puzzled.I have the Nvidia Control Panel options configured for FS9 to use it's settings instead of the FS9 application setting (this is how I've always understood is the better way) and I have the Anti-Aliasing check box unchecked in FS9 itself (again, this is how I've always understood is the better way). However, I just noticed that if I check the AA box in FS9 my aircraft textures (at least) look much better. Now, this particular system is an older one and is as follows:P4 2.81.5GB RAMGeForce 7600GTMy Nvidia Control Panel settings are thus:Anistrophic Filtering = 8xAnistrophic Mip Filter Optimization = OffAnistrophic Sample Optimization = OnAntialiasing Settings = 4xConformant Texture Clamp = Use HardwareExtension Limit = OffForce Mipmaps = BilinearGamme Correct Antialiasing = OnHardware Acceleration = Single DisplayNegative LOD Bias = AllowTexture Filtering = High QualityTransparancy Antialiasing = MultisamplingTriple Buffering = OffVertical Sync = Force OffIf the Nvidia settings are supposed to be controlling everything why would checking the AA box in FS9 give me better results? I was always under the impression that checking that box in FS was pretty much always a no-no because the Nvidia settings always provided better results.Any ideas?

Well, if you read enough threads you see many different setups reported as providing best quality. So if in-game AA is working best for you, OK. Of course, the nagging question is maybe something isn't sorted right and it could be even better. The problem I have, and have never seen any solution for, is how to find some independent way of determining just what AA or AF is actually being applied when I fiddle with the settings. It would be nice if there were a set of test textures that would work like a test pattern to make results of tweaking evident.scott s..

I have read enough threads. That's why I'm posing the question. The thought process always was, from everything that I have read over the years, that it was never good to have the AA box checked in FS no matter what the system specs were and that it was always better to let the Nvidia (or whoever) control panel settings control what's going on.

Try to use Nhancer, instead of Nvidia control panel. It will give you a way better results than default FS AA, or Nvidia CP.

My Specification: I CAN RUN FSX IN MAX SETTINGS....i don't care about dell, bell, amd, intel, 60000 wats power supply or alien made graphic card....

The problem is the regular control panel for nvidia sucks controlling FS. As suggested, use Nhancer to set the controls and see how it looks.

I have seen the posts regarding Nhancer but I remember it requires something that I didn't really want to load on this already slow system. Besides, it looks like the nhancer.com doesn't work anymore. At least I can't get to it.But, even if it did a better job, it doesn't explain why checking the AA box if FS makes things look better. All of the posts I remember reading were before nhancer was ever released anyway.I don't get it.

Well stick with whatever works I guess. But again, simply changing a setting in the default nvidia panel does not have any effect on FS, so it's quite possible that you're seeing no AA when you think you're seeing 8x.Nhancer does not require anything special, besided framwork I believe, but many add-ons and general programs require it too and it has no effect on the computer. Nhancer also works just fine, not sure where you got the info.

What do you mean changing a setting in the default Nvidia control panel does not have any effect? Originally this was the only way to make this change and everybody used it before Nhancer. Why would it have no effect? I don't understand.Yes, a newer version of Framework that I would rather not install unless necessary.

Carob, Nvidia drivers frequently override your settings changes so what you set in the control panel is not what you really get. Enhancer overrides Nvidia's override and sets the changes automatically. No fuss after the initial setup and it does not need to be run during FS sessions. Get it. It is one of those priceless things that have really improved MSFS.Hope this helped,Mel

In the years before I started using nHancer, I was never able to make AA/AF work right in FS9 windowed mode...ever. Lots of other people were in the same boat. nHancer allows you to drill down into the driver settings in ways that the nVidia control panel will not. I still remember the delight when I read a post by Ryan Maziarz about how to use it and finally, after literally years of tweaks that never worked, got it working. It was the best improvement in FS9 since the 9.1 patch...RegardsBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO
