Help, where can I get a Nvidia GTX 285 card?

Featured Replies

Greetings,I was just gonna pull the trigger on my new build but my builder can't seem to find a 2.0GB 285 card. What the heck do I do now? Does anyone know where I can get one or suggestions on a comparable second choice? I want my new build specifically for FS and given the cost, it has to me right.I would sure appreciate some advise. I don't know what direction to go now.Thank you all very much in advance.Cbreeze

FSP532,I have to admit that I know very little about computers. That is why I came to this forum. I surf the posts but a lot of the techno jargon might as well be a foreign language. I am just looking for a little advice that a novice like me can understand. I only posted this because I did check many sources but they are all out of the card and was hoping that someone knew where I could get one. Is that too much to ask or are newbies like myself prohibited from posting on this site. With a total of 3 posts to your name, if this is the kind of advice you are gonna give, you know what you can do with that roadmap.Cbreeze

gman,Thank you very much for the link. I went there and yes, several cards are available but I would prefer EVGA and those are out of stock everywhere, at least the places that I checked. I was told that EVGA was the one to go with by several sources and if I had to pick from the others on newegg, I would be choosing in the blind. Thanks again, cbreeze

I prefer EVGA but I hear BFG is pretty good and they have the 2GB available.

I originally wanted a EVGA 2BG but BFG has a GTX285 OCFU that is factory overclocked to 712Mhz. It is a 1GB card but I understand from my research that a 2BG is useless for FSX. The oc on this card will, however, help out.Guess what the OCFU stands for? What you are thinking is what BFG intended. On their website it says, "Give the competition the bird." Anyway, I bought mine at Microcenter a couple weeks ago. They are also offering a $20 mail in rebate. So far, the card and the rest of my new system is blowing me away. I guess, compared to my old Athlon 3800+, that isn't much of an achievement but so far I am happy.

duckbilled,I appreciate your help. In fact, I read some where here that you got your card from microcenter. I had never before heard of the chain. I checked and there are a few stores in my area, so after striking out on the internet, I gave them a call. One store had two EVGA 2GB cards left. Good thing I was on a sick day today cause I ran right down there a picked it up. Needless to say that I was happy and can continue with my build. On a side note, this was the only thing I was looking for from this post. The response from FSP532 was rude, ignorant and uncalled for. You indirectly helped me and I really appreciate it. That is why forums with people like you are great.Backto the topic. After all this, now I am shattered to learn that my new, rare and highly sought after, card is a dog :( I am not going to change it now. Could you please enlighten me on what you found out about there being no FSX benefit with a 2GB card? This runs contrary to all that I have read and I have read a lot. I was checking the box and it stated that the card I bought could be overclocked. Do your think it would be wise to overclock my card. I threw the question out to the company that is building my system but haven't gotten a resonse yet.I am still interested in hearing how you like your monitor. I have a couple of final choices in mind. That is the only thing left to decide on. Samsung just came out with a Syncmaster 23" XL2370 that has been getting great reviews. I checked the Best Buy stores in my area. They have then in stock but none on display yet. Anyway, I have a week or two yet to decide. Thanks again,Cbreeze

Cbreeze,I love my monitor. Looks great so far. The only think I wish I had was a larger monitor and some ergonomic adjustments.Microcenter is really great. I was all ready to buy everything from Newegg. I went in there to look at something else and realized there prices were very competitive with the net. I'd rather give a local guy the commission than order online so I bought all of my components there. Again, with Best Buy, buy four monitors and return three.BTW, I know you are fairly new here but that rude post was not typical of AVSIM. Most of the people here are mature and willing to help. And as far as I know, AVSIM isn't short on bandwidth or file space.

I own the 2Gb version and the texture loading is much better, I run a 3head2go at 3840 wide so the extra RAM helped with the AA etc, exactly the same clock speed as the 1gb version also. You can OC any 285 using riva tuner but from my experience GPU clock speeds on high end cards dont seem to do that much with FSX in terms of FPS. I went from an 8800GTX to the 285 and didnt see more FPS, the benefit was I was able to display better AA and clouds were simply sucked in and spat out with ease even at 4096, I have found that the defacto for graphics card is the memory bandwidth/interface with the higher numbers being the better
