FSX meets HD 5870

Featured Replies

I think it is time to do some videos with the 5870...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmBn9Wh_eIIThat's the first video at Manhattan. The Quality is not great but you can see how this card will run FSX. I get about 7-15 FPS more then with my GTX285.The AA is not as good as it is with the GTX285, but it is not bad. Of cores you can activate AA Super Sampling for the 5870 but then the FPS drops.I'm simming (USA, Europe, Australia) now for about 12 hours with this card and I love it! For me it was the right choice!More videos are coming.

Thanks for the video! How does FPS compare between the cards if you set AA on the 5870 card to be as good or better than the GTX285?

My guess is bigtime from what I've heard. Everyone I know that jumped to the 5870 for FSX has went back to their Nvidia based card because the overall graphical quality is much better.

Not sure. I have both and my subjective opinion is AA (antialiasing) is better with the ATI and AF (aniso) with the GTX285.Best.Miquel.

If you want the same AA-Quality (and only AA) you have to set AA-Mode = Super sampling and AA = 4x in the Catalyst Control Center. Then you get the same IQ as wit Nvidia Cards but with a bit (about 5) less FPS. Perhaps better drivers will come or perhaps the snow this winter will be black, how knows... :( At the moment the AA Settings are as follow: AA-Mode = Adaptive Multi-sample and AA-Level = 8x with Filter = Wide-tentThe reasons why I stay with the 5870 are the following:1. I play other Sims/Games too and this Card runs all smoother (I don't care about FPS aside from Benchmarks) than every other ATI or Nvidia Cards2. For me, the clarity of ground textures seems better than with my GTX285 3. Textures are loading a bit faster4. As far as I can tell after two days with the 5870, this card matches perfect with my other hardware components5. This is the first time I can experience smooth flights in all my favorite areas and that's the main reason to keep the 5870

Thanks for the info! Much appreciated.

I made another "crappy" (my wife has our handy-cam) video. This time with Aerosoft's Manhattan X. With my GTX280 and GTX285 it was not possible to do this without major stutters even with AA off. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HS2hYl7vZ8ADon't get me wrong, this is not to say that the GTX Cards are crap!! This are just my personal impressions.Keep flying! Or tweaking, testing, benching... :(

As FSX is a CPU dipendant game/sim the only way to try and compare results is to add the CPU type and speed, I get very good results with a 920 i7 overclocked to 3.9 Ghz and a 4650 1 Gb card... :(

FSX is dependant on a well balanced system.Try running FSX on a system with a 6 year old 64MB video card on an 4.5GHz i7 975.Try running FSX on a i7 975 system with a Radeon 8570 card with only 256MB RAM with at 800MHz with latency 10 (min requirements for FSX according to MS).crascmax comparison between the cards are made on the same computer (all other system components equal), which IMO is a very good way to make a comparison. I'd guess that he is running his i7 950 at 4GHz or above. But if he should run it at 3.8 or at 4.3 wouldn't make much difference when it comes to comparing the GTX 285 to the Radeon 5870.More important is to make the comparison with equal graphics quality regarding AA and minimizing shimmering.

Hi thereUlf is right, I compared the two cards with exactly the same Components at the same speed (4500Mhz) of my i7 950.If you guys are interested in some overclocking comparison, here there are:Graphics Card is 5870.Flying from KJFK to Manhattan (Aerosoft Manhattan X)Average FPS with all set to auto in Bios (no overclocking 3.06GHz) = 15 (-8) stutteringAverage FPS with 4100MHz = 19 (-4) smoothAverage FPS with 4500MHz = 23 smooth

Crashmax, thanks for the info but from what I can tell based upon the thread it looks like the 5870 still doesn't compare to the 285 when you combine performance AND quality. The 7-15FPS gain was at lower quality settings, so in my mind it is all a wash. I hope ATI can improve their drivers going forward so we can get performance AND quality out of the card.

What about SLI with older cards, say 2 x 9800 GTXs?

What about SLI with older cards, say 2 x 9800 GTXs?
FSX doesn't support SLi, so it will not help you. Instead, it will most probably cost you 1 or 2 frames per second, since the CPU is slightly loaded by the presence of the second graphicscard.Regards,Frank
