December 1, 200916 yr I installed AVG free 9.0 (AVG suggested support for ver 8.5 was to end 30 Nov). After installing, my desktop seemed to be really slow (opening folders, clicking on shortcuts, etc). Doing a little searching brought up a good number of user complaints about 9.0, some with severe slow down problems. The problem seems related to a new feature in 9.0, which runs a background process that builds a cache of file data, supposedly to speed up scans through "optimization". There is no way to stop this background process from running, though AVG web site suggest a future program upgrade may provide this capability. In the meantime, users are disabling the cache exe program so it won't run. The claim is that this doesn't affect the A-V performance, though I guess there is no good way to prove this.Something to look at if you upgraded to AVG free 9.0 and FS seems to be running more slowly or new stutters introduced.scott s..
December 1, 200916 yr Whilst I in no way whatever dispute any issues you, or other people, may be having, to be fair I must say that (so far, fingers crossed) I haven't noticed any difference at all since installing V9. Gavin Barbara Over 10 years here and AVSIM is still my favourite FS site :-)
December 6, 200916 yr I, too, noted an immediate slowdown with AVG 9.0, but after disabling the link scanner everything was back to normal speed. The link scanner also interfered with watching U-Tube videos.Bob

In short, RC was prevented from comminicating with FS by AVG but without any warning being issued. That doesn't sound very user-friendly!I decided to install it to see what was going on. I too experienced the same problem and I also found some of my Project Magenta software couldn't link to FS. The offending module appeared to be the AVG Tray utility as terminating that via AlacrityPC resolved the problems.AVG9 was also causing me problems with Outlook so I decided to remove it from my system. I installed Microsoft Security Essentials in its place and it seems to provide adequate protection. I think AVG have shot themselves in the foot with this release.AVG9 has expanded into new areas and apparently negates the need to run Microsoft Defender. Microsoft have somewhat surprisingly recommended AVG9 can now replace Defender. So it does appear v9 is a completely different animal to its predecessors. Ray (Cheshire, England). December 10, 200916 yr Author My main concern is with running background disk reading/indexing that can't be turned off. AVG9 allows for selective turn off of other features, and I have done so for link scanner and safe search. I also turn off the real-time file checker if I want max FPS/smoothness in a flight session.scott s..
December 10, 200916 yr Moderator My main concern is with running background disk reading/indexing that can't be turned off. That's configurable in the OS isn't it? Right-click a drive letter, select Properties, General tab and deselect Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching. That's how you do it in XP. Vista and W7 will be different but the option should exist. I believe it's always recommended you turn it off for the FS drive although I turn it off on all my drives. Ray (Cheshire, England). It is a new feature introduced in AVG 9.0 which is designed to speed up system scans. AVG launches a process, avgchsvx, which runs in the background and collects certain file info (not exactly sure what) that it saves into its hidden folder $AVG\$CHJW on each local drive.scott s..
