February 14, 201016 yr Hello,I have FEX, shoud I uninstall it before installing REX ?Tks,UlissesNo. I have both installed and also use both. On the options pages from both programs you can set what to install and what not. This way you can use (just an example) clouds from FEX and water from REX. If you don't do that, each program will overwrite the other program's textures. BTW By setting those options you can also install just one specific texture. Example, you have FEX clouds and the rest from REX and you want another FEX water animation. Just tell FEX ONLY to install the water animation and all other textures, FEX and REX, will stay where they are. (It will also save you time.)BTW When you uninstall either program, you only uninstall the interface: the textures you installed will stay in FSX until you replace them with other textures!
November 29, 201015 yr FSX can only handle and show ONE set of textures! When you choose a specific theme in REX wich specific clouds, skies, water, etc. and let REX install them, ONLY those specific textures will show up in FSX. Mind you, that doesn't mean you only have for instance 'one cloud:' the textures contain enough er... information to fill the skies with all kinds of clouds, depending on the weather, but they will come from the same texture set. And so there is also ONE sky texture and ONE texture for the various kinds of water.FSX only has a specific amount of textures for the environment. REX replaces those default textures with new ones, but the new textures wil have the exact same name as the old default ones! Because FSX doesn't know how to handle any other files! The amount and names of texturefiles are ALWAYS the same. REX (or FEX or whatever addon) does not ADD any files: none at all, it only REPLACES files! So if you want really different clouds than you have installed now (lets say fluffy ones instead of thick ones), you have to run REX again, install other clouds and then ONLY those clouds will appear in the FSX world. In short: REX (and similar programs) do not ADD textures, they replace the default textures. This is exactly how i thought REX to function - but i still dont get it!!For example: I wanted a nice, realistic "Storm" texture so i installed the stormy textures within REX. The result is now that i have dark, blueish "thunderstorm" sky WHENEVER i fly FSX and WHEREVER I FLY TO. This doesnt make sense! It takes pretty long (20mins sometimes) to install those textures...and then i am LIMITED to only those textures and "flair". It doesn't make sense to me AT ALL to fly around in Spain in sunny weather with the wrong sky, clouds etc...UNLESS i go through the whole ordeal AGAIN and let it install "nice weather" textures for 20 mins simply because i might decide the next minute i want to fly in sunny weather. Someone on the forum said this is not the case and i do NOT need to "install" every time i want another weather - but i see it here right before me that the sky is too dark because REX has overwritten something and now the sky looks dark NO MATTER WHAT. I dont get the concept of this AT ALL.You don't HAVE to do that. I bought REX in the meantime and I have certain textures/themes installed and those are used for any weather that REX or I myself create. It's not that certain clouds can ONLY be used for specific weather: the clouds I got right now look great on a sunny day but also when there is a thunderstormCan you elaborate on this please? How can a certain set of clouds match thunderstorm and nice weather at the same time? If i fly in sunny weather i don't expect huge cumulus clouds nor darkish sky. I dont get the "install textures" concept of REX...or i am missing something essential which i still havent figured out.
November 29, 201015 yr Moderator Hi George. After reading your post I think that you're making REX way more difficult than it needs to be.When I first installed REX I went thru the menu and selected the sky colors, cloud sets, water textures and animations, and all the other features I wanted to see and installed them, just once and haven't changed them since.I can see your confusion on the rain clouds or stormy sky textures and see how it would get confusing. However, if you select a cloud set that you want which you would see 90% of the time in real life and install it, then load your weather and have gray and rainy skies, then you will see gray and rainy skies, not white puffy clouds. FSX will still render the storm clouds the way they are supposed to be rendered regardless of which white puffy cloud set you install. If you want I could take some screens and show what clouds set I have installed then show how it looks in FSX during both stormy weather and also regular weather with just a few passing cumulous clouds. This ins't to say you cant install new cloud sets everytime you fly, but its way too time consuming for me anyway, and I would bet that the majority of users find one cloud set they like and stick to it and not change it all the time.Same could be said for dawn, day, and dusk sky textures. After careful examination of all the combinations possible, I chose what looked to be the most realistic color when compared to what I see on a daily basis of where I live and I installed those and have never changed them. Granted realistic could be considered boring, however when compared to some of the sky colors that you could install from REX, most of those sky colors aren't something I have ever seen on a regular basis. So for me boring and realistic looking closer matches what I would normally see where I live and see probably at least 350 days out of the year.If I were you I would go back into the REX UI, select a nice set of clouds that you would like to see for normal weather conditions, including non stormy but cloudy day conditions, then install them. After that is complete load FSX and make a flight using the weather theme Cold Fronts and have a look. Then go back into the weather menu and select the Major Thunderstorm theme and see how it looks. You will be surprised to see that the once white puffy clouds you installed are now gray and dull looking storm clouds.Regards Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
November 30, 201015 yr I can't recommend REX Overdrive enough. IMHO it's probably the most important add-on because it affects the sim in such a dramatic way. The sky, clouds, runways, lighting, etc come alive in FSX.To try to compare it to FEX, it's unfair. FEX is an incomplete product. REX is a complete weather enhancing program that continues to improve due to it's excellent team of developers.Don't walk, RUN and get it! MSFS
