Any FSX Win 7/Vista users using ATI Cards please read..

Featured Replies

Hi I am posting this here in the FSX forum only as I am having trouble finding FSX users that are operating on Windows Vista/7 not XP and that are using an ATI card. I have recently upgraded to FSX as I have upgraded my hardware to a Core i5/ Ati 5850, 8GB Ram. Now FS9 runs beautifully but with FSX I am getting terrible screen tearing issues whenever I fly (I am using Track ir) so I did a bit of research and have found that the big problem is that unlike FS9 that turns on V sync in the game automatically, there is no way of enabling it in FSX. If you use CCC and apply 'wait for vertical refresh' (v sync) it does nothing. Apparently this is a driver issue that up until now has not been rectified. As Vista has been out for quite some time I find this very strange...Having done more research there is a 3rd part application d3d overidder that can enable V sync but its useless as it causes black screens in FSX every few seconds when playing...My question is I am really surprised this has not come up before and I would love to see a sticky in the Video Card section saying beware if using any ATI card there is no V sync in FSX!! I really wish I had stayed with Nvidia now as

Hamish,I'm running an ATI 5850, E8400 overclocked to 3.6 ghz, 4gigs of ram, Win7/64 FSX SP2 and an eyfinity setup 5760/1080 and only see the very occasional tear. I primarily use this machine for iRacing and deliberately don't use vsync as it causes input lag which is noticeable when trying to drive a racing car at speed. I'm using the latest ATI drivers with the hotfix (don't have the number here). Due to the huge number of pixels that this system is pushing I run a limited frame rate of 21 which is quite playable. Did you try with and without the Trackir? I've been quite pleased with the ATI card and only wish the drivers would get updated with the bezel management to fix the multi-monitor image misalignment.

The same issue existed with the previous generation of cards; I had the 4870 and had the same problem. I am disappointed to hear that ATI has not addressed it. I ended up going back to an nVidia card as the lack of VSync had such a serious impact on image quality when using TrackIR. However, I did find that I could get Vsync to work in DX10 mode with over rider, although DX10 has its own issues. Whether you can use DX10 with the current generation of cards and drivers is an open question.Cheers,Noel.

Hamish what is your screen resolution is it full screen or do you have black bars framed around the screen no mater how small?

My screen resolution is 3840 x 1024... No I am runnjing full screen no black bars.... I will check out the DX10 side of things but I think I read that with DX10 you definately cant have VSync on in FSX... Obviously because I have a 3 screen setup and with Track IR I really notice the tearing, as soon as I pan my head the screen wiggles, its probably not so noticeable on one screen... Its a shame as I have had 3 Nvidia cards which have been great and I WISH there had been a sticky thread in one of the forums saying. Win 7/Vista ATI FSX NO VSYNC!! then I would have bought a Nvidia card....Hamish

I'm running an ATI XFX HD4890 with 9.2 stock drivers on Windows 7, 32 bit. I have the fan up at 100% manual all the time and FSX just runs and runs with my frame rates pinned at 30. I don't ask too much of it, but I use CumulusX and WinchX and TileProxy. I use FSX for gliding mainly. I don't see any graffics problems. I'm about to try a further 4870 in Crossfire, not for FSX which I read doesn't do SLI but for the benefit of other sims which do.

Thanks Guys for your help... I have had a reply from gman in the video card driver forum and I may have spoken too early... It looks like there may be a way of forcing V Sync on in FSX by using ATI Tray tools ( I was using d3d overider part of riva tuner) creating a profile for FSX and making sure the force Vsync on is ticked... and your cfg has the force Vsync on line... I will test this tonight when I get home and report back, it will be wonderful if you do not get the black screen every time you open the ATC window etc.If this works I may have been too harsh on ATI and I take it all back.......Will let you know....Hamish

I am running an ATI 4850 with FSX and Windows 7-64. I also ran it with Windows7-32 and have no problems with tearing or any video problem. I use the latest ATI drivers and ATI tray tools just to see the frame rates. Vsync is a non-issue for me an most users with ATI cards.

Don't keep you hopes up. Vista override mode in ATT does exactly the same thing as d3d overrider. So we can either use Vista/7 and Eyefinity but no vsync, or use XP with vsync but no eyefinity. Welcome to the club.

Have just found this out.... tried it myself... so are we surprised there are not more ATI owners who use Vista/Win 7 complaining of the same problem??? in FSX.....Hamish

I can't give you any links, but I have read that Matrox triple Head 2 go has had issues when used with an ATI card, and has been that way since the beginning. It is actually recommended to use an NVidea card. I have also read that Matrox do not support Win7, and have no plans to do so in the future.Does your ATI card not support eyefinity? If it does, get an active Displayport/DVI connector for one monitor, and use the 2 DVI connectors for your other monitors, and this may solve your problems.Bill
