FS9 Addon Texture folder is Empty

Featured Replies

I was just cruising the various FS9 subfolders in the Addon Scenery folder and discovered that my Addon scenery/texture folder is empty. The Addon scenery/scenery folder has various .bgls but the texture folder has nothing. Can this cause a problem?ThanksRich Perry

it should be empty unless you have some addon textures that you installed

The answer is yes, a serious memory leak due to empty texture directories is a well-known and never-corrected FS9 bug. You should seek out and delete all empty texture directories under your FS9 directory, plus any in scenery directories that may lie outside the FS9 main directory but are referenced in the scenery.cfg file.CheersBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO

Thanks Bob...I suspected as much. It would be nice if there was a neat little program (like scanAFD) which looked for any empty scenery or texture folders.CheersKemo

Unfortunately, the story has spread like chinese whispers over time. No way is it as extreme as suggested. As far as I know (and there is no definitive story to this "well-known bug") there was an issue in FS2002 where a texture directory (empty or full) accompanying a landclass file in a scenery directory would give a problem, causing much disc searching for the right textures. Many believe this problem carried over to FS2004 but I have conducted tests and have not found this to have any effect at all on my setup.I'm sure there will be a chorus of "oh yes it does" so delete all your empty directories if you feel it helps. But remember Flight Simulator in its default installation situation provides you with empty ones, as per the start of this thread, and that is completely deliberate. Microsoft are simply creating a basic starting position for add-ons.John

Agreed. For the last many years, I've had plenty of empty folders all around my fs9 dir and had no problems. When I got wind of this 'potential' problem...sure I deleted them as there is no harm doing so, but my situation stayed the same.
