Would you buy African Airstrip Adventures ?

I'm curious and interested in this title but one thing worries me. Even in the product advertisment I'm warned that maybe tis is no god purchase. I'm reffering to the system requirements that is suuposed to be taken seriously and means a E6850 minimum. See my system descriptiuon below. What would 'The scenery however makes full use of the density settings so when your system is not top notch you can scale down complexity and still see amazing scenery.'mean for my part? I do realise that with a system I have comprimises are necessary but also you wan't to use the products features and enhancements. Otherwise it's pointless getting the product. My systemAMD X2 6000 (how does that compare to E6850)4 Gb PC6400 RAM8800GT 512M DDR3 videocardWin 7 x64

G'day JFri,I have African Airstrip Adventures and even though I haven't played with it a lot, due to time constraints, the few times I have it has been quite enjoyable. (Even with the steep-ish learning curve for me.)Yes, the system requirements can get quite heavy IF you want all, or most- of the eye-candy. The included manual gives you a very good run-down of what you can expect based on your choices of items to disable, and I imagine that even with your system (which isn't too modest) you should be able to get a fair frame rate with some decent scenery.I agree that it seems pointless that you would need to have a really heavy duty PC in order to enjoy this add-on to it's fullest, but that is primarily due to the strains that the AI (animals and birds) will place on the system (CPU and RAM), not so much the flight model and scenery. Besides, we know that FSX itself is a system hog of it's own accord. :( I don't know about you, but a lot of enthusiasts will upgrade their systems to a better model within 2 years anyway, by which time the up-to-date hardware should be well capable of handling nearly the maximum that this software can throw at it.That's my view anyway. I suggest waiting for others to put in their views and then you can decide. As I say, I do enjoy it.Cheers and good luck.

Regarding animals I don't think I really need them. After all it's about getting away from the ground. One reservation though I would like birds in the air if and only if it's possible to actually collide with them. That would enhance challange and realism. But if they are pure eyecandy I see no point in having them tax my resources. For me there are very likely no possiblity to upgrade my system within two years. The importent thing is how it works on the system I have now.

If you would like some great scenery and GA airports, don't forget Papua New Guinea (and they have birds!):http://www.islandsim.com/

My personal opinion is that it is a terribly flawed piece of software. I fly scenery add-ons like TongassX, Fly Tampa St. Maartens and The Grenadines, PNG Bush Pilot without problems. African Airstrip Adventures bogs me down to a slide show and you don't really get all the much for the weight -- some zebras, elephants and flamingos. Plus, the airports are all screwed up. The airports they add don't show up in your GPS and are not added to the FS database so you can't put a flight into your auto pilot and go. The airports that are in the FS database have been moved, but they call on the default positions so if you start at most of them, you will find your plane a quarter mile out in the bush. AAA is worst scenery add-on I have ever bought. I'll buy more Aerosoft planes, but not any more of their scenery.

It bogs you down to a slideshow on what system? Are the airports they add fictional?

They're not exactly fictional, but they're not ICAO or in the FS database. My system is a Q6600 Quad with 3 G of RAM and an ATI HD4870 video card. I can hold 30 FPS in TongassX at Very Dense with real weather. If I go to AAA, it's like I'm running a 386. A friend with a i7 and 12 G of RAM running Windows 7 64 bit, tried AAA once and dumped it declaring, "There's something wrong with this software."

The scenery is very uneven, some parts will run beautifully, others will slow down my system (core I7@4 ghz). The really odd part is that the area that slow my system down don't look any different than the parts that don't.Which is a shame, the concept is outstanding and completely original and the smooth areas are beautiful, it is heaven for the bush pilot enthusiast.Maybe a patch could fix things. I would also second the recommendation for the PNG scenery from pacific island sim, a truly beautiful country, completely under-represented in FSX and the scenery is so well optimized it will run like default. The approach into Tapini is worth the price of admission alone. And yes some of the airports are fictional.

I'll second that. I love PNG Bush Pilot. It's one of the very best. One of the interesting things about it is that it has a lot more animals and animations than AAA does, but PNG remains very frame rate friendly. No system problems or graphic weirdness. Graham does great work. PNG has porpoises, sheep, birds, people that wave at you -- oodles of eye candy. It also has some of the most challenging landings ever.

I did find a german review of AAA. There it's stated that by disabling some files you can remove the animals and after doing that performence is very good. But before very bad. Also a commentary to the review stated that not only airports but the whole area is fictional i.e they didn't took a map from Kenia but used there imagination. But if the airports are not in the database how can you then create a flight starting at such an airport? How do you do?

I disabled the files they listed. It made very little difference. The fact that they have to tell you to disable half of the files is almost a confession in itself that there is something wrong with the software. There are six airports in AAA that are not fictional and are listed in the ICAO database. They are the airports associated with the towns. Several of these airports are moved in their mesh, but they did not include *.bgl files to tell FS the new location of the airports. I have never seen that error made in any other scenery add-on. I worked through AAA very carefully because I had to build a hub there for my VA. I have never been as frustrated with a scenery enhancement as I was by AAA. It simply did not need to be so troubled.

Thanks for the input Syd, you pretty much summed up what I have read elsewhere. I followed the discussion on this on the aerosoft forums during development and some of the design decisions had me scratching my head, so I am not surprised by any of this. I also had a bad experience with another scenery from the same designer so I know to think twice before purchasing any more addons from him.

Hey, Michael. Good to see you.

Same here man! Pappy and Boomer been trying to get me in the cockpit at EVA, but I can't seem to find the time to leave 3DSMax/SBuilderX well enough alone, LOL.

There's "a time to every purpose." The day will come around when you'll suddenly say, "Hey, I want to fly some of this stuff." When that hits, you know where to find us.
