Never heard of this engine before. But boy, is it outstanding. This is real Google Earth data.

Amazing isn

This is pretty exciting!I wonder if anything will come of it?

Great, but next time they should model movement of controls surfaces :(. Don't want your plane to visually look like it has 10 pounds of ice on the ailerons, rudder, and elevator! The engine looks very smooth though, and I love the amount of trees and the terrain.

Outerra does no more than state that it offers a "3D engine for seamless planet rendering from space down to the surface. Can use arbitrary resolution of elevation data, refining it to centimeters using fractal algorithms."Outerra makes no claims about it being an aircraft simulator and, for all we know, the Cessna could have been added "manually" to enhance the video rather than being fully simulated.

And please do keep in mind that what they are not doing is just as important as what they are doing. For example, they are not simulating 22,000 airports and there is no AI flying around, nor ATC keeping track of their Cessna's position and vectoring it to a moving jetway complete with baggage handling. There is no weather, changing and updating real world as they are flying. None of the Cessna's gauges were moving either.I imagine the FPS would be lower if they were doing these things. Just a guess. :0Plus ... I only saw 1 type of tree!

I really didn't care for the main video with the Cessna flying around. I suspect it would look better with realistic grass, houses, and other objects but this is just a start. There were two short videos after the main one I found that were truly sensational and that was the video of the trees (
) and the water in the ocean (
). I don't know if they were part of this "engine" or just related videos but very realistic. Jim
