About to pull the trigger on a 285

Featured Replies

Well, I just crossed over the other way, from an nVidia 285GTX to an ATI (Gigabyte) 5870.nVidia has never fixed the long-standing issue that still causes tool tips to cause weird artifacting, and I haven't been able to get FSX dual monitor configurations to work reliably with my 285 ever.ATI has indeed finally gotten adaptive AA (analogous to nVidia's combined mode I believe) to work on the 5000 series cards at least with the latest (Catalyst 10.2) drivers. Supersampling mode is not required. There do seem to be some issues with VSync and Vista on some machines with the ATI boards. My biggest problem with my 285, though, is a rash of black-screen crashes that occur at random times into a flight, and from reading eVGA's forums I am far from being alone with that. Hopefully it's just a defective card and I won't have to RMA it multiple times like a few guys have reported...I've not ventured outside the nVidia camp for at least a decade...so far my ATI 5870 has been a close equivalent to the 285 in performance, and I haven't begun to try overclocking it yet. Each has their strong points, and each has their problems I think. RegardsBob ScottColonel, USAF (ret)ATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-VColorado Springs, CO

I tried one of the best 5870's that money can buy. After two days of testing, I went back to my GTX 285 and returned the ATI 5870.I'll wait until the new generation of nvidia are released.
