FMC computer freeze

Featured Replies

I've recently been having issues with my entire computer freezing up on me when trying to set up an approach in the CDU. I've read other posts regarding this issue and was curious to see if anyone had figured out a definite way to avoid this. What I've been doing to prevent a lock up was s lat rev'ing my desired approach from the waypoint just before my listed airport in the F-PLAN page. I still get the occasional freeze even when doing this though. On my last flight, prior to selecting an approach or runway, I input two "place/bearing/distance" waypoints which I placed in the middle of my STAR. Upon selecting the second of those waypoints, I got another complete lockup. This is a total lockup of the computer, no black screen, no error messages, and no way to close the sim - I have to completely shut down the computer. This always happens during the approach portion of the flight while fiddling with the CDU. I'm using FS9. This is becoming quite frustrating for me.Any help would be appreciated. Robert Williams

Robert, the method that seems to work everytime is to add an enroute fix after departure and before arrival. Not sure if PBD fix will make it happy, I usually use a VOR when doing local pattern work. I never fly to the VOR, but it acts like a placeholder in the MCDU from which I LAT REV to add the approach.I don't know why the PBD waypoints in the STAR would upset it, oh I see on re-reading you were able to put them in the route string but the lockup occured with you tried to LAT REV from a PDB fix. Hmm. Sounds like you are being creative and building your own local arrival route to connect from the STAR to the approach. I just fly the local radar pattern using HDG. I've connected the STARS to approaches in my SIDSTAR collection, give it a try. Avsim library filename for current cycle is cycle_1003_sidstars.zip

I'm going to try to re-create the problem to see if I can narrow it down some. Specifically, I was flying into KDCA (very lightly loaded) on the ELDEE4 arrival - traffic was using the River Visual 19. I wanted to break off the arrival at ELDEE and proceed to my two PBD waypoints which mark the beginning of the approach - first at DCA/328/10.0, followed by DCA/328/6.0. I wanted to place these points in the flightplan to give me a points to be at specific altitudes. Now that I think about it....I think the actual freeze happened right when I upselected "/3000" next to my first waypoint. At this time, I still had a discontinuity following my two points.Robert Williams

Hello Carlos. When you say load a clean flight, does this also mean not to load a personally saved panel state? I've been mostly loading panel states from previous flights. Should I just load one of the included panel states?Robert Williams

I always create my own panel state for each saved flight, and never load a saved panel state separately from loading a flight. When you load a saved MD11 flight, MSFS will load the flight and wx files and pmdg also loads a panel state file so you don't have to duplicate this step.

Ok so I need to save a flight before exiting FSX next time, then just load that after I loaded the default plane?Daniel Talbot

I get the same issue, and it's downright annoying. If I try to add a way point, within the route, during cruise, and then subsequently delete that way point, I get a complete lockup, necessitating closing the sim.If anyone can throw any light on this issue it would be good news.It would be interesting to know how many others get this issue.Martin Wilby

Hi Martin, I've crashed a couple times changing my route during approach. Not sure if it's the same thing, but each time (think it happened two or three times). There was another topic similar to this one I think with more info. Can you give more detail on your scenario? Such as if you were at cruise, approach, descending. Whatever you can think of adding.

Hi Dan.I was en-route between EGPH and LFMN. In the cruise at 33,000.I decided I would prefer a discontinuity before the VOR approach into 04R at LFMN. Therefore, I entered an unneeded waypoint with the intention of deleting said waypoint, to generate a discontinuity. Unfortunately, as I deleted the waypoint, the system locked up, necessitating firing up the task manger and closing FSX.Tried the same thing on a second flight with the unneeded waypoint being HON, and the same thing happened, hence reproducible.I get the usual error 1002 application hang in the event log.Edit:Just done a test flight...Couldn't reproduce it this time, no matter how many times I added and deleted waypoints.However... I did manage to reproduce the crash you spoke of reentering a star.Martin Wilbymartin Wilby
