Combat Flight Sims

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if the Combat Flight Sims provide the same eight 2D views as in Flight Sim itself? That is Views Fwd, LFwd, RFwd, etc.If so, I'm tempted to try CFS with triple monitors. I've found aerobatics & fighter type manoeuvres quite gut churning with the Extra 300! An Immelmann (1/2 loop and roll out at the top) is quite something with a triple wide 45" horizon!Alex Reid

You probably can, but it would put you at a tactical disadvantage. In general, in a Conbat Flight Sim, you want to keep your eyes on target at all times, so you will not want to keep 3 precooked views on 3 separate monitors. Furthermore, MS FS and MS CFS, and X-Plane are the only three flight sims that have stayed around this long that haven't completely removed 2d view that I can think of, and for CFSes, MS CFS is the only one I know of that still has it in the latest iteration that was made post 2001. Falcon 4.0 has it, but that is from 1998, and Allied Force really is just a glorified mod for Falcon 4.0, so AF doesn't count.

In a flight combat sim, that is the one situation where no one can argue that TrackIR is vastly better then any amount of 2D monitors (unless ofcourse you're completely surrounded by them, which I have yet to see). You'll be really limiting yourself there Alex.

Good news for multi views! Thanks Peter. The target isn't always dead ahead or even within the 22 1/2

January, you only see horizontal, you need horizontal and vertical to survive in a CFS. Also in a dogfight, you tend to want your view centered on the target.
How do you see vertically when you are sitting on top of an aluminum tube, inside of which is a great big blow torch? <grin> I suppose with swept wings you can see down, looking to left or right. But so also do you see down in 2D views! My view tends to be wherever I choose to concentrate my vision. With Trackir, will it bring up an overhead view?- That would be handy in a dogfight.Alex Reid

Watch the video in my previous post again, that's what I'm talking about.

Alex, we're not arguing about your 'wide field of view' in your FS simulator here. I'm sure it's great in fs9. But take it coming from a guy whose flown in Il-2 for many years, that monitor set up with do nothing but limit you in combat. I don't care if you have 1 or 4 monitors, get yourself TrackIR. A wide forward view does very little because in the heat of a furball, there is very little action that stays in your forward views, and action takes place is all 3 dimensions at once. If you dont believe me, get yourself a copy of Il-2 1946 and go fly online. By the way, the flight dynamics are incredible in it, so def give it a try.

Red1 & Peter- I hear you! But in FS I'm bumping up against the overhead VIEWS limitations inherent in the sim and with my space and budget. What's really needed is a large concave screen with multiple projectors so that the scene actually wraps around you- as in real life. Probably not as difficult as it sounds- if you have the space and a few dollars. I believe I know how to build such a screen- but have yet to solve the money problem!!!!I'll keep my eyes open for a copy of Il-2. Wonder if it will run on my old AMD XP 2200 1.8 Ghz 'puter? How does it compare in horsepower needed, with PMDG 747, which flies OK but pushes the old girl to its limits when using triple views? (But a piece of cake with just two views.)Alex Reid

You both have a point. :( IMO the ultimate is to have both

I'll agree there, if I can have a concave screen that surrounds me...that'll be second to none.Il-2 was developed A LOOOONG time ago so it'll run pretty much run on any computer as long as you're willing to play with the settings a bit. I'd say its more like flying a default plane in fs9...but ofcourse as with fs9, there are many mods that enhance graphics, but you don't have to use them.
