Windows 32bit and 64bit

Featured Replies

Hi,I've seen these mentioned several times and really don't kind off understand what they actually mean. I'm getting a new pc built at present but it's having Windows 7pro32 then downgraded to Windows XP with my old scenery. Will the old Swedflight scenery work on 64 bit like EKCH etc. And all the Japan ones by Overland? As I never know what scenery works for 32bit or 64bit?I will be reinstalling FS9 with various payware / freeware scenery so does it all have be 32bit computer? Any help appreciatedRegardsJason Thompson

Just got a new laptop with Win 7 (I don't think there is a 32 bit version of Windows 7 is there? I've got 64 bit anyway...) and I've got FS9 installed and running fine so far. I doubt many sceneries or add-ons have an issue with 64 bit OS...

I am running windows 7 64 bit. FS9 and ALL my old applications (Active SKy;Ultimate Traffic;PMDG 737;Dreamfleet 727; payware sceneries from Overland,Aerosoft etc and all my old freeware scenery downloads) work just fine. 32 bit applications run fine in Win 7. There is no need to use the 32 bit version or use XP instead. When you install, just do so outside of the default C/program files folder, and turn User Acount Control to the lowest setting.

There is a 32bit version of Win7. A major difference is the amount of RAM (Random Access Memory) that the operating system address(get at). The maximum for a 32 bit operting system is 4Gb. In practice this means that a user with 32Bit Win 7 will not be able to use all that memory - the most you will get is somewhere arund 3Gb. The rest of the RAM is unused. The memory taken out is for operating system and device use. With 64Bit you have a much greater amount of addressablememory and if you have 4Gb then you should see nearly all of it. It is also possible (if you machine supports it) to add more memory and 8Gb or more is quite practical. More memory is always a good thing if your computer can use it. Thus if you have 4Gb of memory you should be using a 64Bit operating system (they exist for XP and Vista as well of course). The worst place to be in memory terms is a 4Gb machine with a 32bit operating system. Some manufacturers do ship those!. I do not think there is any price differential between 32 and 64.There are other potential benefits for applications designed to take advantage of the 64bit system and more come forward all the time. However a 64bit system will run 32bit applications with no problem. I have Win7 professional 64bit on my systems and run all the flight sim and other applications with no problem. Gicen the choice (if a developer povides a 64bit version of their software) then use that otherwise 32bit is just fine. With 64bit you will notice that there are two Program Files folders. One is Program Files and 64 bit apps will go there by default. The other is Program Files (x86) where 32 bit apps should go. However if one ends up in the wrong place I don't think it matters much.

Troops,I was having an installation with my Fly Tampa Seattle scenery with my Windows 7 Pro64 OS and I sent a letter to the Fly Tampa Support desk and I received excellent support. The following is a copy of their reply to my request. I have since used their information and method to add two pieces of scenery that I down loaded from the AVSIM Library.Hi TomInstallation of older sceneries like KSEA under 64bit OS'es runs into this error related to inserting the new entry into the Scenery Library.See here:http://www.flytampa.org/support_iframe.html#2 The files that make up the scenery have all been copied to Addon Scenery/FlyTampa-Seattle/.What you need to do is go into FS Settings and add the entry FlySeattle there. Note there is a bug in FS9/FSX running on Win7 where it seemingly won't let you add any entries. The trick is to click within the white empty area within the file dialog as described here: http://aussiex.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=4426 As far as UT and KSEA, You need to have FlySeattle listed above UT, which should be automatic once you add the Seattle entry in the list. Also, very important, UT must be listed below the Seattle Aerial Photo, which is a default FS2004 entry.Let me know if this helpsMartin Hello, I purchased a new computer that utilizes Windows 7 Pro64 as its OS. I reinstall my copy of your Seattle Software in Microsoft Flight Simulator FS9 and after installing a portion of the software it stopped and said that it is not compatible with my OS. My problem is that your installation program appears to have installed a number of the files and now the Seattle Airport is pretty well messed up. I would like to remove the scenery but although I can see the files in the FS9 Add-on Scenery Folder it does not display in either the FS9 Settings Scenery Library Folder or under the Windows add or remove programs option. Any idea what I need to do. I am also running Ultimate Terrain USA but I believe that at one time I had both of these scenery packages running together on my old computer. Thank you Tom

Hi,Thanks to all who replied to my post.RgdsJason Thompson

Jason,FS9 and FSX are 32 bit applications (4GB memory limit).A 64 bit operating system (computer) say with 10GB memory turns itself into a 32 bit computer (with 4GB memory max) to run these older 32 bit applications (programs).
