What plane is for me?

Featured Replies

I would like to purchase or download a plane that would have the following features:Track a localizer and glide slope of a ILSTrack a GPS courseMaintain a selected speedHas a FMCHas VNAV capabilitiesHas LNAV capabilitiesFor FSXI have been away from flight simming for a couple of years and just got back in. A lot of new stuff out there that I'm not aware of, so I need your help.I have purchased the PMDG JS-4100. This is a great plane but doesn't have some of the above capabilities I'm looking for.So, which plane is for me that would have these capabilities? Thanks,Roy Warren

You mean a plane where the autopilot will do this for you? There is a lot to choose from. The PMDG 747 and MD-11, for example. My preference is the MD-11 (I own both). The Level-D 767 is another very nice model - great systems and it flies really well. It is fairly old, though, and you may not like the visual model and VC compared to newer products. It is an excellent "beginners" plane because it is so well documented.(By "track a GPS course", I assume you really mean LNAV. Or are you looking for something that will work with the default GPS?)Captain Sim has 757 and 767 models that look great, and many people like them, even if they are a bit lighter on the systems side than PMDG and Level-D products.

RoyFor a simplified but good looking aircraft where you can follow a GPS course in the same way as the default airliners, you might like to have a look at Commercial Level Simulations:http://www.commerciallevel.com/I can recommend both their 767 and 747Ian

I would add Eaglesoft's new Citation X into the mix. The systems and flight modeling are great and it can do everything you mentioned. It would also allow you to shoot approaches into smaller airports that Level-D or PMDG might not make it in to. I've found that I enjoy the Citation more now that Eaglesoft modified the VC. Looks better now than the initial release did.

Eaglesoft's CitationX is indeed a very nice plane and one of my favorites - it has everything you list unless by "maintain a set speed" you mean auto-throttle, which it does not have (nor does the real Citation X).PMDGs MD-11 is, for me, the most complete simulation available - the MD-11 has everything on you list, and then some.

Define lighter? I keep reading this in posts over and over, yet no one ever quantifies the statement. As for system detail, the CS757, and CS767 is more detailed. Just about every function is modeled in some form on the CS models. There are still some functions on the PMDG 744, and LDS 767 that are not (Albeit mostly minor systems.) The CS has has working VNAV, LNAV, Autoland, and all other systems modeled by LDS and PMDG, as well as a working tiller. Although still tied to the rudder, which is a FS constraint, you can control ground steering with the mouse if you choose using the tiller control. Try and do that with the LDS767, or PMDG 744. When you lock the cockpit door the door is actually locked. Now all that being said I do agree, the systems of the LDS, and PMDG models have better fidelity, but that's a quality measure, not a measure of detail. So for detail of systems I give the nod to the CS757/767, but overall quality of those systems still go to the LDS767 and PMDG 744/MD-11.

Thanks

Yep Eaglesoft's Citation X does all that! And it's fast!http://www.eaglesoftdg.com/CitationX_20.htmFlight1's Citation Mustang does that except VNAV - but I also highly recommend it!http://www.flight1.com/products.asp?product=f1mustangReality XP's GNS series also has vnav and lnav + waas approach capabilities if you want to add it to acft:http://www.reality-xp.com/flightsim/gns430/index.html

Thanks for all the input. The CitationX sounds like what I'm looking for. I like flying in and out of the smaller airports so this would work for me.I'm not a beginner as someone mentioned, I've just been away for a year or so, Train Simming. I started with flight simulators back in the '80s when the first one came out and have had every one that has come out, Microsoft and others. So, the more complex and "real" the better I like it.I love making instrument landings, especially with a ceiling of a couple hundred feet, and breaking through the clouds and seeing those flashing lights streaking towards the runway. Always gives me goose bumps. Thanks again for the help,Roy Warren

Welcome, the only thing I'm mentioning for the ES Citation is the throttle controlIf you want the fadec to work as advertised (essentially you set the throttle to cruise mode and it maintains the correct speed) you'll need a registered version of FSUIPC - I don't have this myself. I usually have no issues setting my throttle and getting a fairly constant speed. If you want it to work perfectly though you can buy FSUIPC here:http://secure.simmarket.com/pete-dowson-fsuipc4.phtml

If you like flying into regional airports, this one is also very good: http://www.feelthere.com/2005/erj.html .The FMS is the same type that you find in the Citation X, but the implementation covers some things that you will not find in the Eaglesoft jet.
