FS9 ATC Problems

Featured Replies

HiOver the past few weeks I have been having two problems with ATC on IFR flights. The most common is that I get stuck with the departure frequency for almost the entire flight - only when I am within about 80 miles of the destination do I get switched to the appropriate frequency. For example, on a flight from KLAX to KSEA I get handed over to SOCAL departure after leaving LAX and then am stuck with that controller/frequency for hundreds of miles until I am about ready to begin descent to KSEA. Is there a file or files that maybe have become corrupted? I am using an installation that I have spent hundreds of hours tweaking and putting in add-ons and am really reluctant to do a fresh reinstall. The other problem only happens occasionally - I get handed over to a controller and then when I try to contact them, I get an in-screen message saying "You have no-one to talk to" or something like that. Then as with the problem above, when I get close to my destination it suddenly all comes right again and I get passed to the arrival controller. Can anyone help? I have plenty of disk space and could do a clean install and then copy and paste the appropriate ATC files into my current installation if I knew what'where they are.

Thanks Johan. No, didn't miss any directions - I can communicate with ATC to request altitude changes but that's it - they don't hand me on to any other centers. I have certainly thought about getting PFE or Radar Contact - this problem may well make my decision for me if I can't solve it

Well, nobody was able to help me so if any future person has this problem and finds this thread, all I can tell you is that I ended up doing a fresh reinstall of FS9.1 and the internal ATC is now working normally. I just wish I could have found out what file(s) controls the ATC rather than having to spend hours and hours reinstalling all my addons. But on the positive side, the fresh install loads much faster now that I've got rid of all the junk in my install that had accumulated over the years.

Next time try this. Open your flightplan( via the FS menu), delete all waypoints behind you and leave a reasonable distance (20-30nm) to the next enroute waypoint. This will usually allow FS9 ATC to "find" you and resume normal controlling.

Thanks Randy. I sure hope it doesn't happen again but if it does, I will try your suggestion. I appreciate the response :(

Why are you still using FS9 ATC?? It is totally unrealistic. Get yourself PFE which is a step in the right direction. The default ATC is quote "Is as unreal as it gets!" unquote.vololiberista

I tried using PFE and it has it's own problems, and When I checked their forums, the developer says you shouldn't use time acceleration! So, to get it to work you are supposed to fly in real time.

Hello Mr KiwiPeople are inclined to knock the default ATC,but I find it does a reasonable job and usually gets you from A to B without trouble. However! its the constant stream of messages it keeps firing at you on route that does get a bit annoying (I am talking passenger jets here)Anyway that aside if you have it available it should work and you should not be forced into a position where you have to buy a commercial alternative.Recently i have started flying without using ATC at all and for me its a much better alternative.I will create a plan in FSNav,then use ASKY 6.5 to check the wind direction for my dep and arr airports,i will then select a SID or STAR if available for the runways that nearest matches the wind direction I will then taxi to my runway, check that nothing is inbound and of I go.This way you avoid ATC altogether. If I find I get a little lonely on route I select the flight following option for a bit of ambience, this way also means you can leave your PC without having to worry that ATC has cancelled you flt plan or without having to cycle through loads of centre messages if you use the ignore ATC trick.Anyways some thoughts.cheers Andy

Thanks for the extra input guys. I do use a number of "add-ons" to enhance realism and absolutely agree that the default ATC is not the greatest, but for various reasons, both Radar Contact and PFE have not convinced me to want to spend the money to buy them. I have put my limited FS funds toward other things. (It sucks having to feed my family and pay the mortgage instead of being able to spend all my money on FS!) :(
