June 13, 201015 yr Hi Guys -Im following the tutorial as best as i can, but i just cannot nail the J41!The problem i am having is with the Autopilot. On page 78, it say press Direct To the relevant waypoint. I do that, press the NAV button and nothing happens. The NAV doesnt illuminate.Also, even tho i have ALT SEL set to ARM (lit up in amber), my plane flies straight through and over the altitude i set on the big ALT dial on the FCS. And the plane is not making a smooth climb - the vertical speed varies a lot.The green AP and YD lights are ON on the FCS panel.I know the solution is going to be embarrassingly obvious, but hey! June 13, 201015 yr Don't confuse the autopilot/flight director with the FMS. The FMS provides a direct to fix function, but the autopilot has to be in the LNAV mode to take advantage of it.The direct to fix is described on page Ch 8-11 page 109.The autopilot will not fly to a waypoint without the FMS providing waypoint information.There is more than one page 78 in the manual and I couldn't find what your attempted to reference. Unbelieveable!!!One more thing - Im finding it hard to keep my speed constant. I know its just a case of making small adjustments ( i only have a keyboard so have to use the F2 and F3 buttons). Any tips on keeping it the same? If i leave the plane for a few minutes my speed changes by a long way! :-)Thanks again for your help! Adrian Burley London, UK
June 14, 201015 yr Adrain, after the level off to cruise keep your climb power until you accelerate to cruise speed of about 235KIAS then set power to 68% torque. Wait it for awhile to make sure it doesn't accelerate to red line and you should be okay. It takes a long time to accelerate so be patient and don't leave until everything is in equilibrium. June 15, 201015 yr She seems to like 15000-17000 as far as speed and temps go, some summer days she might be temp limited to below 17000.This is also my favorite range in the C414, I get good TAS and stay below the FL180 floor where IFR is required. Also, jets are above and unpressurized are below so traffic is much less of an issue. The air is half as dense at 14000 as sea level so getting above this level really helps TAS. Dan Downs KCRP

June 16, 201015 yr I coaxed her to FL300 once but yes, I prefer FL16-17 especially in the summer. The So Texas upper air is usuall 30-40C higher than ISA, which is a real operational issue for this bird. Dan Downs KCRP
June 21, 201015 yr When you use alt sel, you always need to set a specific vertical mode. Either you use IAS or VS. VS will give you a more steady climb, though you may need to adjust while on the way up to your selected altitude/FL. IAS mode may cause VS fluctuations as weather and winds in particular change. I find FS to change too sensitively here, even with Active Sky at work, so I tend to stay away from IAS mode...Andrew Andrew Entwistle
